Found this Spanish coin that was made in 1721 and 1722 for distribution to North American colonists in 1721. Spain originally produced about 585,000 of these coins and sent to colonies in Canada. Canadian French colonists rejected coins because they were copper and not silver or gold. They packed them up and sent them back to Spain! Some were then sent to French colonists in Louisiana. This is third known find in state. One of the other two had a hole through the middle and was possibly used as an ornament by local Caddo Indians. Not original picture as coin is now in conservation but in great shape. I'll post a second picture with obverse. Coin was found while researching possible civil war battle site that also had objects from early 18th century home site. Found Half Dime on site from early 1800's but nothing as exciting as colonial coin!

Great-Find

Edit: Here's the obverse.

to the Community!

I put your other picture into you original post here. We need to keep the content in one thread.

I posted a link in the other topic to redirect others here.

Nice find! I do not know much about these things, but I am sure many will be interested.

Is the photo in your thread the exact coin you found?

If not .... do you have any photos of the actual coin?

In answer to some of your questions, the picture is not the actual coin. The found coin is undergoing electrolysis for preservation purposes prior to being exhibited in a local museum as part of the many objects from the early 18th century we discovered at this site. The coin has been authenticated by two separate experts at Louisiana State University and Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas. I will get an actual picture of the coin for your review as soon as we get it out of electrolysis. By the way, we confirmed the site does appear to have had a civil war skirmish fought there with some navel ordnance found including a large part of a fired navel shell and some steel canister balls about the size of 1 1/2 golf balls each. Nasty stuff! Location is still secret until we have completed documentation of entire site and posting on the historic state register. A lot of work still remains and who knows what is still there to find?
