Oops! I pulled this post from another site I frequent; that question about the depression was for someone there.
As for cause, I suspect they punched the heck out of that 7, which left a berm around the depression the die--and they didn't polish down the fields?

These are fun to look for, because they're common and usually interesting in Colombia coins.
I mostly search for overdates and RPDs because they are better documented. When I find a doubled die, I'm just lucky.

LOL - I thought you were testing me!

My first impression was a mega-impression, too.

I forget who found this one, but it's pretty dramatic for a modern German coin:

That is such a great coin--and very surprising to originate from the Denver mint.

Some doubled dies are less obvious.
Here is one I found on a 1927 Australia Penny.

May not be as dramatic, but clear separation. Keep 'em coming!

This one is more severe--I wish it were mine.
It's a 200 Mark German coin from 1923, with a tripled double die.

Whoa! That's a beauty!

Thanks for sharing that one!

Wouldn't it just be a tripled die?

I do see a list building. I have a question though on the technical side of this. and bear with me if this has been discussed - I just didn't get it. But how exactly does this doubling (or triple)occur on just portions of the coin. I know I'm missing the answer but does the die 'stutter' or something on just part of the coin? and this may have everything to do with my ignorance of the production process

Don't feel bad, weavus,
I have been directly explained this to, and still I cannot honestly say I got it!

It's like an old professors' joke:
One prof is complaining to another, a tough topic on the lecture today, students just don't get it! I explained it once - they didn't get it, I explained it second time - they didn't get it. I explained it the third time, I finally got it, but those idiots still didn't get it!
