I am starting a project where as I would start keeping track of the rolls of Canadian nickels I go through. As I search between 250 to 400 rolls a week, I'll update this as I go. My goal is to keep myself focused enough to find my own 1964 XWL

All I'm keeping track of is:
Number of rolls.................... 250 or $500
# of .999 nickel dates 1922-1981..... 1082
% of .999 nickel......................... 10.82%
1922-1936 dates(George V")................ 0
1937-1952 dates(George VI")............... 5

List of variety/errors:
1-1946 "Arrow Head".............. 1 coin searched
0-1962 "Double Date"............. 4 coins searched
0-1964 "Extra Water Line"..... 36 coins searched
0-1965 "Large Bead"............. 21 coins searched

Full bags of .999 nickel:
Number of rolls.......................... 100 or $200
# of .999 nickel dates 1922-1981........... 4000
1922-1936 dates(George V")................. 1
1937-1952 dates(George VI")................ 25

List of variety/errors:
0-1946 "Arrow Head"................ 2 coin searched
0-1947 "Dot"............................ 5 coin searched
0-1957 "Bug Tail"..................... 2 coin searched
0-1962 "Double Date"............. 28 coins searched
0-1964 "Extra Water Line"..... 138 coins searched
0-1965 "Large Bead"............. 130 coins searched

I would be interested in knowing the amount of nickles pre-1953 you find. I dont search nickles other than what I get in change and would like to know how easy(hard) it would be to add to my collection.

your from the states are you searching canadian nickle rolls or american rolls and pulling canadians

Much smaller sample in southwestern Ontario is as following, I would say I am close to what you get ratio wise. Cannot say I have kept track of my .999 nickels but there are still a bunch out there.

6 boxes of nickels

1940's - 5
1950's - 18

Good luck on the 1964 XWL, always ion the lookout for that one as well.

Personally I do it because I enjoy it I doubt I will ever complete the set from roll finds, finds pre 1950 are slim I find.

I still haven't found the XWL. When I first started hoarding, I had rolls with as many as 18 nickel coins, but I am afraid those days are gone. 250 rolls a week is a lot of searching!

Good luck, Wild Bill! I did the exact thing you did about 2 years ago (not quite as organized as you, though, and on a smaller scale). I probably searched about 50,000 nickels and pulled nickel at around 16%. But I was (finally) successful in finding an XWL. They're out there!

By the way, 0.999 Nickel resumed in 1955, so you may want to modify "1937-1952" to "1937-1954", or keep track of the chrome plated finds separately. They are a real treat to come across. But I never found a tombac, George V, or Buffalo nickel in Canadian rolls. And the '65 large beads is a realy tough variety -- hard to believe they exist after missing on hundreds of 1965s.

You could add the 1962 variety to your list also. Again, good luck!
