I wanted to share the following coins. Not only are they nice examples of post abdication folles of Diocletian and Maximianus Herculius but also have some additional interest to numismatists.

Diocletian as Senior Augustus Follis, (first coin)
Obv:-- D N DIOCLETIANO FELICISSIMO SEN AVG, laureate bust right in imperial mantle, olive branch in right hand, mappa in left
Rev:-- PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG, Providentia standing right, extending right hand to Quies standing left, branch upward in right hand, vertical sceptre in left
Minted in Cyzicus (not Trier) ( S F / KS //PTR)
Reference:-- RIC VI Trier 677a (Rated Rare)

I also have a link to a larger image of the coin in case anyone is interested:-
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/ga...41br_img.jpg

It is attributed by RIC to Trier (Treveri), but a comparison of portrait styles and an examination of follis hoards reveals that this issue was not struck in Trier but in Cyzicus.

It would appear that the prototypes for this type were made in Trier and then exported to the other mints for their implementation of the type. It would appear that when the engravers at Cyzicus made their first copies they copied everything, including the PTR mintmark and then added their own mintmark in the centre field. Someone must have realised their mistake and the issue is relatively short-lived and is followed by an issue without the PTR in exe and the Cyzicus mintmark moved to the exe. This is illustrated in the second coin attached:-

Maximianus Herculius as Senior Augustus Follis, (second coin)
Obv:-- D N MAXIMIANO FELICISSIMO SEN AVG, laureate bust right in imperial mantle, olive branch in right hand, mappa in left
Rev:-- PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG, Providentia standing right, extending right hand to Quies standing left, branch upward in right hand, vertical sceptre in left
Minted in Cyzicus (S F // KD). A.D. 305-306
Reference:- RIC VI Cyzicus 23b (Scarce)

I think that they make a pleasing pair of coins.

Nice coins and interesting info.

Thought I would share this one as its a recent Diocletian I bought, not a post abdication though.

Having trouble finding a RIC number to fit the 'MIL-ITVM XXI' combination but it has a lot of silvering and is very, very nice in hand.

My pictures dont really do the silvering justice but the sellers pics were even worse, couldn't see any silvering on those which, I think is why I got it for £10.

Very nice coins, Martin. Here is my London Mint exemplar from the same series:

Post-Abdication-Folles-Of-Diocletian-And-Maximianus Post-Abdication-Folles-Of-Diocletian-And-Maximianus
DN DIOCLETIANO FELICISSIMO SEN AVG ............. PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG
RIC VI, Londinium, No. 77a - DIOCLETIAN

Post-Abdication-Folles-Of-Diocletian-And-Maximianus
Actual size of coin
weight: 9.7 grams

Abdication coinage: AD 305 - Diocletian wearing Imperial mantle, holding olive branch and mappa. Reverse depicts Providentia extending a hand to Quies (symbolizing tranquility & peaceful rest). This issue -- RIC no. 76 & no. 77 in the names of Diocletian & Maximian Herculius -- ends the "large folles" series of approx. 11.0-9.0 gm weight.

Added historical note:
In AD 303 the two Augusti of the first Tetrarchy, Diocletian and Maximian Herculius, announced their intention to simultaneously abdicate and retire (Maximian somewhat reluctently) their titles and authority to be assumed by the Caesars (Constantius and Galerius Maximian) who in turn would appoint new Caesars thus perpetuating the Tetrarchic system. Diocletian and Maximian did in fact abdicate and retire in 305 to become Seniores Augusti.

Commemorative abdication reduced weight folles were issued in the summer of AD 307:

RIC VI, (Londinium), No. 98 -- Diocletian

Post-Abdication-Folles-Of-Diocletian-And-Maximianus
Actual size of coin
weight: 9.1 grams

* Obverse: Diocletian laureate and cuirassed bust right
* Reverse: Quies holding branch downward, (rh) leaning on sceptre (lh)

Legend abbreviations:
DN= Dominor Nostro - our Lord
PFS= Pius Felix Seniore ("happy" retired Augustus)
QVIES= Peace and tranquility
AVGG= the two Augusti (Diocletian and Maximian)
PLN= one of the London mint marks (Pecunia Londinium)
