I thought maybe the metal detector people may know the answer to this and since its not coin related I thought this may be the best place to ask this. I have found a ring and its marked P10k and I think it means its plated but others have said it means pure. I know if the P is after the karat it means plum (which means it has that amount of gold and no more or no less) but I have always heard if the P was before the karat of gold it meant plated. Will someone that knows please let me know how this really is

What is pure 10K gold? It's either 10K or not 10K. However, 24K is pure. ;-)

you are not understanding what I meant by plum, plum means its exactly that kt of gold, no more no less, not thats its pure. I worded it wrong but figured everyone would know what I meant

Quote:
PLUMB GOLD A term used to describe gold jewelry that contains the precise amount of gold in the alloy that the Karat mark indicates. In the past an item marked 14Kt could legally have been 13.5 karat and still considered 14K. Today an item marked 14k must be at least 14 of 24 parts fine gold and is considered plumb gold. In some instances manufacturers have marked their jewelry 14KP meaning plumb, but inadvertently have confused the public that believed the 14KP mark meant gold plated.

The P in front means plated.

I have just checked on other websites and forums about 'plumb gold'.

I appears that "P10k" means that the alloy is at least 10 karats fine. (.417 fine)

If that is the case, I do not think that the item is gold plated.

Mind you, there is almost as much faking in the jewelry industry as there is in numismatics, especially in the area of gemstones.

The science of Gemology has developed to identify gemstones and their fake equivalents.

A friend buys jewelry for melt, and based on what I've seen, I don't know why a ring would be plated 10K.
Plating tends to be a higher carat because they're going for color on cheap jewelry.
Plated rings also show wear easily--which may be a way confirm that your example is plated?

The best way to find out would be to take it to a jeweler and have them test it. The only down side is that if it is plated there will be a spot worn through where they scrapped it on the testing stone. Of course there will be a wear spot on a gold ring too, but that isn't as noticeable and can be polished out. My gut feeling is it is plated, but I could easily be wrong.

yeah I just thought the P in front meant plated and a P behind the karat meant plumb

Does 10kP mean the same thing?
