Hi there, newbie coin collector.

I've decided that I'm after the 50 yen coin from Japan, since it's not too expensive (other than the Showa 62/1987) and there's no special collectors editions.

I've noticed some proof sets available fairly reasonably on ebay stores from the 90s, and it occured to me that it would be a not terribly expensive way to get a coin in proof condition for my set if I were to buy them and sell off the remaining coins.

However, before I do, would this be something of a crime against numismatics of which I should be rightly shunned for even considering such a thing?

(By the way, does anyone know a Whitman album supplier in Canada? The shipping from CoinWizard is kinda steep, and the others aren't that much better...)

IMO it would be fine. Alot of collectors buy the mint / proof sets for a specific coin/s that they need. Always remember this "It is your collection to do as you want."

Times may change but, right now, keeping a proof set in original packaging has done little to enhance its value. For modern proof sets in fact, as a general rule, they start out expensive and then depreciate in value each year. Sucker investment, perhaps.

Cherry picking sets at dealers and breaking out that one PF-70 seems like a more profitable course of action.

I do it all the time! If I kept all my coins in the plastic cases they came in I'd run out of room in the house.

I was actually wondering about that myself. I have a 1974 proof set still in the case. It hasn't gone up in value very much either. I'd love to take them out and put them with the rest of my collection. So this isn't some form of coin abuse?

If you handle the coins properly it's not abuse at all. It is rather an establishment abuse which I don't see anything wrong with!
Actually many proof and mint sets are housed in inappropriate materials and need to be freed to prevent the damage.
