Is there anyone very familiar with these two sets,to inform me about the toning that supposedly takes place with the Jefferson nickles because of the packaging they are in? I have contacted a number of sellers and they all state that it is the packaging that causes the five cent piece to take on a dark toning. I generally ask them does this take place through the plastic(?) that they are encased in?They never answer the second question. I am not sure if this is plastic or some similar material. If anyone has "recently" pulled a set from the original U.S. Mint cellophane wrapped set, have they found this toning on the coins? If no one has; do you believe the mint wrapped version would be tone free? If you have one of these sets and it is toning would you consider removing the Jefferson nickel and placing it in a protective slab? Any one's thoughts on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all,

Berry

I am not personally familiar with these sets but I did a bit of research. It appears that these sets are in a cardboard folder that has plastic inserts for the coins. I saw some others on ebay still in the folder that are toned as well. I think one of two things may be the problem.

1) The cardboard from the folder isn't acid-free and it is causing the coins to tone.

2)The nickels in these sets have a special matte finish and were made exclusively for these sets. The nickels might have had a planchet rinse different from normal nickels that is causing toning to occur.

I think it has to be the packaging because I have seen some that the sets were taken out and put in 2x2's and they aren't toned yet

biokemist6 and Bryan1315, thanks a lot for your input, you both have reinforced what I have heard and found. The Jefferson nickel is made from aluminum oxide and silver dioxide sprayed under high pressure. Both Set's nickels were minted using this procedure.
Thanks again,
Berry
