I asked a representative from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization about the current status of the Money and Medals programme that got all those countries over the years to put food-related designs on their coinage and medals. The M&M program started in 1968, but I was not sure about when it ended, if it had ended, only rumors that it had stopped. Somebody once told me that it had closed down in 2004.

To find out for sure, I asked the FAO!

Here is the first reply that I got from the FAO:

"Thank you for your interest in FAO and the Money and Medals Programme. I am the only one still working in FAO that worked on for many years with the programme. Unfortunately, it closed down about 7 years ago [that would have been 2011]. FAO is not selling or dealing with any medals or coins."

And then the representative got back to me later after asking around some more:

"Please kindly note I have been informed from the Legal office of the following:
'The Money and Medals Programme has not been actively advertised over the past years, it is our understanding from a review of the records that the Programme has not been officially closed.'"

Well, that clears that up. I guess it hasn't closed down, they just aren't selling numismatics nor promoting the program any more!
