trout,
What you have is Swiss 5 francs. Confederatio Helvetica is Latin for Confederation of Switzerland. The similar design has been minted since 1922, with some minor modifications, including the size and silver content. Your coin, 1954, is 83.5% silver with .4027 oz. of Actual Silver Weight (ASW).
Under the date it should have a small letter B which is called a mintmark, and it means the coin was minted in city of Bern.

The edge inscription, Dominus Providebit (The Lord Will Provide).

By the way, trout, there was a discussion recently on a coin like yours. That was dated 1931, the first year of issue for this type. They had a few varieties that year.

Totally agree!
My main collection is British monarchs, including the Empire and the Commonwealth. Feel free to share (the images) your collection with us, we like to see pictures of coins!

Only be aware we have a separate forum for British coins. And it's a good idea to start a new, your own, topic rather than hijack someone else's .
