Gordian III coins of this quality tend to go for about £30 in ebay auctions, some (not many) make it upto the £40-50 range. It depends if they are / people think they are rare types. I know as I've been watching quite a few auctions recently as I want to buy some. I have a bit of a concern about the number of them on ebay though, there seems to be a constant supply of high quality ones coming out of mainland Europe and some sellers (one in Germany especially) have 15 or 20 a week listed. It all seems a bit convenient to me and makes me a bit suspicious . I'm not implying in any way that your two coins (this and the one in the other thread) are not the real thing, just giving my impression of many of the ones on ebay. Did you find / clean these two?

I have always been very sceptical about the gold staters of Philip 11 (Apollo / Biga), and those of his son Alexander the Great (Nike reverse).
The most commonly found condition for these coins that I have come across over the last 15 years or so, is in 'As Struck' condition. I find it impossible to believe that most of these coins would survive into modern times with no wear or damage whatsoever, especially with gold being as soft as it is.
They all look geniune enough, all appear to have different dies, all are of good gold, and all are within 1/10th of a gramme of what would be a believable weight of around 8.45 grammes average.

This coin looks 100% correct to me and would have a value between $90-$115 here in the US.

gold does hold up well over the test of time, and if the coins were found in a container (such as a pot) as part of a hoard it is very possible that some of the pieces would be in an as struck condition.

Here is a good example of one selling yesterday on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...t_500wt_1156According to the description its in uncirculated condition. In all fairness while searching I did see a lot more than usual worn GIII coins but having seen what I have over the past 6 months or so I'm almost certain someone, or a number of people have been faking these. At one point about 75% of the ones being listed were in this near perfect condition, that just doesn't make sense, for every perfect coin that survives surely at least 10 times that many do so but are in a much poorer state. I like the two that T0rress has posted and the fact that he found them means he'll never have to worry about authenticity. I also agree with Sel_69l, yes gold does hold up well and would not see as much day to day use as smaller value coins but why is it we never see barely recognisable gold coins for sale? We see poor quality silver and bronze coins all the time, surely nobody would claim that all surviving Roman gold coins are in excellent condition. I've just searched ebay worldwide and every single gold Roman coin is in near perfect condition, it raises enough doubt in my mind that I'd only ever buy one in person in a reputable shop.

bobbyhelmet: I have three ancient gold coins, (one Greek stater and two aureii), they are less than in 'as struck' condition, and they all came from Spink's in London in the late 1970's. I have all of the sales documentation and photographs to go with them.

Quote: Sel_69l: I have three ancient gold coins, they are less than in 'as struck' condition Nice - I unfortunately dont have any gold in my collection, for some reason my interest in collecting seems to peak when I have little disposable cash, when I have money to spend I always seem to find other things to spend it on . I prefer coins that have a bit of use on them - they just seem more honest to me and I also like the fact that they have been used for their original purpose.
