I recently acquired this 23mm metal Token @ a FLEA Market and can't find it in resources available to me. The Reverse: D. GOWANS & CO./ CONFECTIONERS/ 97 CANAL ST./ NEW ORLEANS. The Obverse has the EXHIBITION PALACE/ LONDON 1851/ w/POPE to the left of London & BIRM. to the right of London below the building. The Token seems to be twofold as a STORECARD & EXHIBITION TOKEN.

I was wondering if it is listed in Rulau or some other Token Publication! Any help would be appreciated.

It's a World's Fair commemorative token. It would have been issued for the New Orleans World's Fair in 1984.

Where is the Token listed as a Worlds Fair Commem New Orleans 1984? The D. Gowans Confectionery is listed in a 1851 Directory of New Orleans Businesses. Thank you.

I have no idea where it's listed. I've seen a few of those tokens being offered for sale around town. With the 1984 date attribution on at least one.

The Token has been ID'd as RULAU La 28 /29 (two varieties). The 28 is Copper and the 29 is Silvered-copper, but otherwise the styles are the same. In UNC. its value is $80-100 in 1984 Rulau.

David Gowans started his business in 1842, but didn't become D. Gowans & Co. until 1849 @ 97 Canal St. In 1853 he moved to 143 Canal. About this time he took in a partner named Robert Morrison and started importing sauces, sardines, ale, and other things from England. These tokens were struck by Thomas Pope of Birmingham, England. Really nice token!

This token is not a Worlds Fair from New Orleans item as mentioned by JMerrick in previous post.

Here's a link to the World's Fair in 1851, that this token apparently doesn't commemorate, including pictures of the the Exhibition Hall that apparently doesn't appear on the obverse.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Exhibition

D. Gowan was not an exhibitor at the Exhibition in 1851. There were only 2 exhibitors from Louisiana, out of about 13,000.
The full list of non-British or British Colonial exhibitors can be found here:

BTW, you did mean 2004 Rulau, didn't you?
