Hi everyone, my name's Dave and I'm a newbie here. I just picked this coin up from an ebay auction. The pics were to small to see this oddity and the seller never mentioned it. When I opened the package and inspected the coin, it stood right out and bit me on the nose. The "M" in America on the reverse face is missing. Under magnification it does not appear as if the "M" was removed and under scrutiny, I think I see a very light imprint of the upper right section of the "M". Is it really there or a figment of my imagination? Do I have a rarity or a piece of garbage? I've never heard of this error. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but my luck has not been so good lately. I fell off e roof 2 yrs ago and am now a permanent T7 paraplegic. I could use some good luck to get the van I've been looking at. Thanx for stopping by.

Hi dave

I also see the slightest impression of the M,, what has happened to this coin is the die has filled with grease and or metal filings that did not allow the M to be struck up during the minting process,, filled dies are not uncommon and do not add value to the coin.

I cannot see any tooling marks so I would have to say Grease Filled Die.
The Dies are wiped with Grease periodically and sometimes the Grease fills part of the design. I am no expert and I am sure others here will voice their opinions.

BTW welcome to the forum

Thanx Rick, I learned someting new today. I did some work with Cincinnati & Graebner Hydraulic presses as an engineer, but to compact powder metal to a shape, and after heating, to "Size" it in dies to a finished dimension. I learned then that the U.S. Mint uses the German "Graebner" press in coining
