I see in Canadian Coin News trends that there are values for 1997(O) and 1997(W) coins. What is the difference in these coins? I thought the difference was in the proof-like sets with the location of the 50 cent piece and the dollar.

Hi !

Don't take them for cash but...

"O" mean ottawa and have no mint mark on the coin and "W" mean Winnipeg with W mint mark on the coin.

I don't remember for 1997 but I think that "W" are only available in proof light set and Ottawa was found in proof light set too and in circulation.

Thanks !

The listings for the 1997(O) and (W) coins in trends are for coins extracted from the 1997 PL sets.

According to Charlton 2010 Collector Issues (page 226), "the Ottawa and Winnipeg issues of 1997 can be distinguished by the method of packaging and the finish on the two dollar coins." For 1997(O) sets, the loonie is to the right of the toonie, and for 1997(W) the loonie is to the left. Ottawa toonies are supposed to be shiny and Winnipeg toonies are supposed to be frosted.

There are no mint marks.

Other than the toonie, how anyone would know which is a (O) and which is a (W) once it was cut out of the pliofilm is anyone's guess.

That was what I was thinking. Thanks for the clarification.

Markosz I just checked a 97 specimen and a 97 O'Canada set and neither had w or o marks. oddly enough You helped me discover an oddity on the O'Canada set, it states they are uncirculated with a common loon instead they all have a specimen finish and includes the 10 anniversary loon. I know this doesn't answer the o or w question but if I didn't comment on this now I would forget. anybody explain that..........Don't I remember circulation coins made at one mint and collector coins at the other, that may be the way to tell them apart.

Hi everyone
Let me continue on this 1997 toonie graded ms65 I want you to check how trends in Canadian coins news are set up lets take toonies they are divided by circulation strike from ms60 to ms65 and prooflike numismatic bu from unc proof like sets another words they follow
ICCS population raport that divides coins in to category business strike , and numismatics that's included specimens proof s and prooflikes
And they graded from ms 64 to ms67 in magazine this distinction w and o for Winnipeg and Ottawa must be made because of specimens but 100 $ trend is for ms 65is in business strike

I don't have problem with 1997 but 2006 is very tricky and I wonder you guys and gals understand their is 3 lines for 2006 toonies and 4 designs
