I was looking at a coin today and I got to wondering just how many coin collectors there are in Canada. 10,000? 100,000? I think 100,000 is a little high. Maybe 18,000. If 18,000 is rightish, shouldn't we all own a 48 dollar then? If so, where the #%@* is mine? ;)

What do you mean collector? I know plenty of people who collect change in various amounts with those stands I could see it being well over 100k.

HHHHMMMMMM I've been pondering that question for years now. I've heard figures from 200,000 to 20,000 to 2,000 and sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who collects Canadian Decimal. Many who I speak to collect everything else but!
However , this is an interesting question and when you think of the I.C.C.S. Population Report on Victorian and Edwardian coins in mint condition. There sure aren't a lot to go around. I was reviewing my 2010 issue today and realized there are only:6,971 mintstate Victorian large cents, 1,719 mintstate Victorian nickels, 732 mintstate Victorian dimes, 545 mintstate Victorian quarters and 88 mintstate Victorian halves. That's a TOTAL of less than 11,000 mintstate Victorian pieces available in I.C.C.S. slabs. So by chance, if there are 20,000 collectors of mintstate Vicky's out there, 9,000 of 'em are severely P^@#&% off.

The other question to ask glenzy is this. How many mint state coins are there that have not been graded. May not be as many mad people as you think.

I'm sure the majority of Vicky MS coins have been slabbed.

I don't think that the majority of MS Victoria coins have been slabbed by ICCS. Except for a few key dates and keys/varieties, the cost of certification was/is a large percentage of what the coins are/were worth .. up until about 3 years ago. Certified coins are a big thing in some people's minds .. to others, it's a worthless fritting away of money that can be used for other coins.

I can tell you right now a single person has over 1000 of the 48 dollars.

This is an interesting question that I have always wondered about. Would CCN have an idea or is there an idea of the number of clubs and there membership?

R2bR2c,I don't know about large cents but for silver Vickies the cost of cetification is only a small percentage of the value of an MS coin.
As to the number of Canadian decimal collectors I'm sure more have been slabbed than exist today.

wow...good question and the only real way to answer it is to define a collector....My definition may be wrong but I consider some one a collector if they consistently add to and upgrade their collection.

That drops off those that just collect certain things that the mint hypes up, but will on average never go up in value..like the 1999 and 2000 in circulation series quarters..stuff like that.

I don't think there will ever be a definitive answer as there are many collectors that do not advertise themselves as such..due to fear of breakins etc.

It's hard to define what a collector is. A guy I work with grabs all the unusual design (Olympic, etc) coins that he finds in change. He is a collector, but he does not read coin sites/books, visit shows, or buy coins. I, on the other hand, do all of those things, in addition to grabbing stuff from change.

There are, many, many collectors like him, and significantly less like us.
