the lockbox idea is great to keep the kids out of the good coins

but if the lockbox is still portable, you keep all the nice coins one safe portable spot for the thief.....so for me it is a toss-up, but the question is who or what do you want to keep the coins from.

if it is thief, you need a safe

I've got mine in a 4 drawer fire proof file cabinet that has lockable drawers.
That joker is WAY too heavy to put under your arm and run away with.

Maybe too heavy to put under your arm.. but not too heavy for a big, motivated dude to scoop up with a dolly. Do yourself a favor if security is an issue - bolt it to the floor.

if it's anything like the lockbox for social security, i'd avoid it at all costs mate.

on a serious note: they really draw attention to valuables. being a contractor, I know for a fact I can rip open most safes out there. may take a while, but anyone with a small amount of skill can do it.

How true. Not long ago I had a washing machine delivered and one guy brought in the new one and took out the old one.
A neighbor of mine had his house robbed and they took a safe that was bolted to the floor and wall.

I keep telling people just that. Having a safe delivered too in an area with nosey neighbors starts rumors of all the millions you have in there. With a safe in the house, if visible, kids, relatives, neighbors, friends that see it, also start those rumors of your millions of dollars in there.

The bulk of my coinage is at the bank. I weighed out the pro's and cons of home vs. safe-deposit. Almost a tie. Probably more fire proof at the bank tho.

what if the government puts another ban on gold like in 1933, they took all the gold out of deposit boxes.

My brother and I once stripped an insurance company office of eleven of those things, four desks, the cubicle walls and the carpet in thirty minutes. Another time at a laywers office, the lawyer said he had everything else out of his office, but he didn't know what we were going to do with his safe. A few minutes later he was shocked to see his 800 pound safe being wheeled down the hallway.

Don't be silly. Conder101 is here to find out who has a safe that the owners think is safe. Then he just takes it away and has a really big, big coin collection to prove that.
HHMMMM. Here is something to think about. Remember this post is you plan on inviting him over for anything.
With a safe you too have to remember that during a fire, they may not melt, but do get hot, real hot since the hot air inside has no where to go. Now imagine the melting point of all that plastic on Proof Sets, Uncirc sets, slides for Albums, the Cardboard for the Albums, plastic rolls for coins and on and on with STUFF that melts or close to that. And it is now all over you coins.
And every time you open a safe, all the nice moist air goes in and can't get out so everyone fills their safes with Silicon Gel packs. And those too when hot from a fire emit lots and lots of STUFF.

If you really want to be safe, just send me all your ocins and no more problems.

I use to work for a moving company in NC. Moving a safe is easy with the right equipment. And if the guy is strong enough he can carry it himself.

We were moving NC States alumni office to a new building. One of the guys I worked with went in and dead lifted a 300 lb safe right off of the floor and carried it out the door to the truck. When we got to the destination site. He picked it up and carried it up a flight of stairs. Not a dude anyone messes with.

A good home robber could find most of your stuff in less then 10 mins and be out of your house with the items
