Those brass cents pictured should still be close to 2.5g.

The brass colour is caused by a zinc contamination in the copper bath that is used to plate the zinc planchets.

So if it weight's 3.1 grams would be the legendary 1983 copper penny overcoated with zinc that gave it the brass looking ? I can't find a scale to buy !

Brass: A yellowish alloy of copper and zinc, sometimes including small amounts of other metals, but usually 67 percent copper and 33 percent zinc.

Any alloy of copper and zinc is considered to be a brass UNLESS one of the metals in the alloy is Tin. If it contains Tin, in any amount, then it is a BRONZE.

I have heard reports of 1983 Brass cents (I don't mean brass plated.) In 1963 they took the last of the Tin out of the cents so all the cents from 1963 to mid 1982 are all brass cents.

this is why I was confused about the post in question, I hope I didn't offend anyone, it was not my intent

Brass is actually Copper 69%, Zinc 30%, Tin 1% Approxiamtely pending the final results required.
Bronze on the other hand is also a Mixture of Copper & Tin + vairous other substances. Pending on a preference of final results, Bronze also sometimes contains Posphorus, Manganexe, Aluminum and even Silicon. Again all quantities are pending final requirements. Which is why Bronze sometimes looks like anything but something with Copper in it.
I too always wonder when someone will pop up with a 1983 Copper Cent.
Would fit right in with the 1974 Aluminum Cent, 1959 Wheat Back, 43 Copper, 44 Steel and all the other odd ones. With all the counterfeiting going on I wonder when China will take a 1963 and make it into a 1983.
