G'day, I like Canadian coins, old and new, and I try to acquire ant that come along at a reasonable price.

I don't have a Charlton, and I'm still learning as I go.

I stumbled over this one -
"CANADA proof1901 QV VEILD HEAD GOLDEN COIN Mint550 UNC"
Item number: 110643027461 on a well-known auction site.

Very pretty, but I note the lack of a denomination.
Am I right in thinking that this is a modern fantasy-piece ?

This is most likely from the Spink series of fantasy crowns from the 1970's.

Definitely not an official issue.

Get a Charlton from the local library, or use something like Colonialacres.com as a rough guide.
