Hi all!

It's been around 15 years since I tried a detector. Back then I had a "Bounty Hunter" from Radio Shack. I got so fed up with finding nothing but junk, that I gave up. I never once found a coin. Never once found a nice ring or anything to justify having it.

I know that technology has come a ways from that point. Has it come far enough for a rookie like me to use? What is the best one for the money?

I'm seeing all the cool finds on here, and the TV shows where treasure is being found. It kind of lit the fire under me to try again.

Today the History Channel aired and episode called "Jesse James' Hidden Treasure". They unearthed 21 Morgans and several gold coins including a $20.00! Using a metal detector that actually talked!

I saw that same show on Jesse James, but I only caught the last little bit of it. I saw that they found a gold bar under some tree. What a cool find!

I missed that little bit. Wasn't sure what it was they found under the tree. I know that took years of study to find that location. How easy is it to find good spots to try?

I know of only one place off the top of my head that I want to try. It follows an old wagon trail to one of the first settlements in the area. It's now been overgrown with woods. Found this place years ago. Found old jars and stuff. Coolest thing was an old water well that I never determined the depth of. Dug out the stone covering it in the middle of some really thick overgrowth. I know that there has to be some really good finds in there.

Garrett 250 Ace or the new 350 Ace are the most popular beginner detectors.
