I bought my first old Brazilian Countermarked Coin, I was wondering though how to grade this? In KM the grade starts ant Good and ends at Very Fine !? Also there are 2 coins marked with 40 Reis, 1829R

If I'm correct it is the first one:

KM# 444.1 40 REIS
Copper Countermark: 40 Note: Countermark on 80 Reis of
Pedro I, KM#366.1.

Otherwise this one:

KM# 363.1 40 REIS
14.3400 g., Copper Ruler: Pedro I

40-Reis,-1829r---Brazil-Countermarked-Coinage
40-Reis,-1829r---Brazil-Countermarked-Coinage

Any help, grading wise or information wise is welcome... like I said the first, so a real noob in this countermark coinage!

Thanks for the replys and the link guys! So if I'm correct these coins should be graded, based on the original coin and partially based on the counterstamp itself? I did not know that... It looks like the stamp itself is in good condition, the coin is not that nice though.

But from my experience I would say the coin is VG, thet stamp VF/F

But could someone answer my question on the fact that the grading in Krausse is only untill VF ? I only payed for the lowest grade according to Krause which was €2,50 for Good so I guess I didn't overpay!

Again thank you, and any additional info will be more than welcome

For every country except Canada and the US, the Krause catalogues only list coins in three grades. The cataloguers select which three grades get printed, based on what they think are going to be most useful, or which collectors are most likely to find the coins in. For modern coins whcih are likely to be easily findable in Unc, they list VF, EF and Unc. In the case of these coins, they know that they rarely come in high grades; the vast majority of coins of this type will fall in the range G, F, VF.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
