@ svslav: Sorry, not a single Turkish coin in the lot. However, I can post a pic for you, of the only one in my small collection, if you like.

@moe: Thanks! I have been deeply involved in collectibles hobbies for most of my life. It is the sharing and the camaraderie that makes them worthwhile.

ONWARD, INTO THE TRUE TREASURE !

Before I finish out this effort, I would like to ask a small favor of you folks: PLEASE PROVIDE SOME FEEDBACK on each of the following silver coins. Remember, I am far from any kind of expert in this vast field, and my printed references are way out of date.
So please tell me anything about these box-tokens that you feel is relevant, i.e. scarcity level, approximate grade, current catalog value, personal impressions, whatever.
And just for fun, everyone assign each coin their own 'Drool Factor' number from one through nine, one meaning 'I would not stoop to pick it off the sidewalk', to nine, 'I would dive into a steaming fetid sewer in my underwear to retrieve it' !

The first batch includes coins of approximately USA-quarter size (24mm). This is normally my cut-off size for silver coins I keep, not because smaller silver is uninteresting, but simply because I need parameters and goals that are easily definable so I do not get too overextended. However, I may have to make a few exceptions after sorting through this amazing lot. Now here we go, from smallest to largest:

I'm collecting the Japanese 50 yens instead of the 100 yens, but that's a 1966 (Showa 41 - The two symbols on the top are for the emporer, and 四十一 is 4-10-1 or 4 x 10 + 1 = 41. Showa 1 is 1926, so 1925+41=1966.) Might be worth $1.50-ish. :)

So no droolworthy ones for me as I'm too focused, but they are amazing!

Thanks for the information.

There are about four coins in this photo spread that were not actually in the box, but came as a separate lot from the same estate.
These would be the most recently dated ones, such as the 100 yen. I included them just for show&tell and for exactly the sort of information you just provided. Roll on!

Ichi bu!

No, really! The rectangular ones are Japanese. It'll take a little bit of digging to figure out which Ichi bu they are, though. I have a couple and really like them.

@ svslav: Sorry, not a single Turkish coin in the lot.

That's OK, I have enough of Ottoman Turkey in my collection. My boys like Egypt much better, especially with all recent Lego mummies in the stores.
Here you got another Egyptian 1 qirsh of Abdul Hamid II, ascention year AH 1293, reignal year 23, which makes it AD 1898.

Nice Hamburger! IHL on it stand for the mint official, Iohann Hinrich Lowe. 4 schilling of 1727 (mintage 1,248K) in my catalog is valued at $6 for Very Good, $12 for Fine, $25 for Very Fine.

Sorry but Isabel is not any competition for Victoria!

My favorite in this group? It's a toss up between Pivs IX and Hamburg castle. And yes, I'd run out on a busy street to pick either of them up.

I know what you mean about Isabel!
Nevertheless, the subtle rainbow toning on that coin is very lovely.

Also I am still hoping someone can identify this fat copper, but so far no one has chimed in:

And for those wondering which single coin motivated this purchase, if you have gotten through the pics thus far, then you have already viewed a smaller version of it. Can you guess?

That one could be Austria. If you go here: http://www.archive.org/stream/intro.../search/1761 and look along the bottom, there are orange pointers to pages containing "1761". The next to the last one (page 57) has a line drawing of one that looks very similar to this (check the reverse design). Possible it's a smaller denomination of the same style. If you'd like the PDF of that, go here: http://www.archive.org/details/intr...co00higgiala

If anyone reads Hungarian, it might be in this one: http://www.archive.org/details/appc...mo00budauoft (Hungary/Transylvania). The text version contains "greschl" although I don't know if it's referring to something actually on a coin or is just talking about different denominations.

Here you go.. Link via Google Translate: http://translate.google.com/transla...air=cs|en&u=http://stribrnak.cz/marie-terezie-gresle-1759-1768/

Not sure what "the Shire" is, though.

What a great resource! Thanks!

The listing on p. 60 for Bohemia seems the closest
(crowned arms in three ovals) but they spell it 'groeschl'.

-edit- Your second post definitely found it.

Another example of the "Ein Greschl" coin was ID'd here on the forum last fall. I figured syslav would point it out, as I looked it up, but was busy actually doing something else.
