It is definitely gold plated. The GP coin was purchased during the hype of the silver one. It was purchased off ebay at the time and since forgotten about until recently. The ebay was from Quebec and was a MC at the time which we weren't. I tried searching for any details and only came across this thread.

The RCM Annual Reports for 2007 and 2008 do not list or discuss any gold-plated version of this $8.00 coin. The total number sold for the 0.9999 fine silver coin is listed as 19,996 (2007 and 2008 combined). This makes it harder to believe it was an official RCM issue.

Another thing that casts doubt on it being an official release is the fact that the gold-plated coin above did not have a distinct COA or a distinctive label (per above post). Previous gold-plated coins from the RCM featured a distinct COA and label that identified the coin as being gold plated, the 2010 $5 Hockey SML with gold plating is an example.

Neither of these two points absolutely proves the gold-plated $8.00 coin did not come from the RCM, but they do argue strongly against.

That's a huge range! I guess no one has any addition info? I will have to try to dig up the ebay seller. But given that it's over 5 years ago, it's likely a dead end

I don't think it's a big mystery, someone gold plated a coin and sold it on ebay. Anyone of us could do the same thing, if you contact someone who does gold plating they would do it. Just my opinion.

Not listed in Charlton Vol 2 so not issued by the RCM. There's a guy in Germany who sells stuff like this that's modified by a company there. Gold highlighting on the wildlife SMLs and now full colour versions etc.

I also have one of these coins, purchased on ebay, wasn't much more than the silver one. While I was shopping at the RCM I asked the person there. She said she read about the coin in the collector coin newspaper and that the bank of Canada gold plated these coins as gifts for Chinese dignitaries. I have not been able to confirm this.

Do you know who you spoke with? I have been meaning to get into contact with a senior staff at the mint to confirm this myself....

This was about 4 years ago and I did not know her name. This was at the gift shop in Winnipeg. However, she did reference that numismatic newspaper. I have not attempted to verify this, perhaps there's a way to search back issues.
