Open 'em. These are the Morgans of the long distant future... millions of uncirculated rolls (Instead of $1000 bags) available at face value for the next couple generations, minimum, before they even start to get remotely rare.

Considering that in a lot of places you can probably still go to the bank and pick up rolls for face value, and eventually they will probably be made available in the mints direct ship program at face, what do you think?

IMHO- No. Or not much more than face value. Why?

1. They are mass-produced by the US Mint

2. There is no precious metal contained in the coins.

3. People are hoarding them, so many nice examples will be available for a long time.

These will become the beanie babies and Avon decantors of another generation. People will pay a premium now, only to find that down the road they don't hold that value. They will, however, unlike the other examples always hold their face value (will always be worth a buck).

I will offer a "little" bit of a different viewpoint here, as to NOT opening this roll.

The Government is wanting to do away with the paper $1.00 Federal Reserve Note. Fact. This has been discussed before, that this is why they may be FLOODING all of the Federal Reserve banks with all of these dollar coins......BILLIONS OF THEM !
Now why would they do this if NOBODY is using them ? ......
And they continue to make them !
And they even took the Sacagawea dollar OUT OF IT'S NIFC STATUS and made it "circulate" again (now known as the Native Dollar)
Yet still 99% of the public does not use the dollar coins and has little interest in doing so.
So, if the FRN does "go away".......then now......suddenly......you would have all of these pristine BU Presidential/Sac Dollars now being used in daily commerce.
Can you imagine JUST HOW MANY BILLIONS OF THESE DOLLAR COINS IT WOULD TAKE FOR THIS CHANGEOVER ?
HOW MANY WE'D NEED FOR USE WITH 340 MILLION PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY ?
So, in that event, and in a reletively short time, they'd be as "circulated" as the State Qtrs. were/are, and any and all other coins in history did.
Remove the paper dollar, and the public is left to use these coins....they might end up being the most circulated dollars in HISTORY at that point !
The "circualtion" and use of these coins NOW goes up 98%.....and the collector value of BU rolls/Sets might be there at some level.

Just a thought to ponder for ya.....

(remember, hindsight is 20/20 ! ...How many folks in "coin history" have had the foresight to know certain things which, in the future, would be very valuable information to have known... way back when ? VERY few !)

Unless you "need" the $25.00........I'd just save it back........it's not hurting anything to do so..........and Lincoln IS one of the most popular Presidents in the whole program......so.....

eaglefoot has a very valid point I am unfortunately unable to skwerl away rolls of dollars so what I do is open them look for errors and MS65+ coins because of the numbers produced I believe there has to be some errors out there and being Biz strikes a MS 65+ coin aint as easy to find as SGS grading seems to think.

I'll give another viewpoint...if the government would simply stop making one dollar bills and force the use of these coins, it will save millions,if not billions of dollars.I hope they don't let it become a choice...especially with the state of our economy.

Maineman found the solution I presented in a letter to the idiots in 1971: Quit printing ones. In less than a year, the problem would vanish.

If they had any sense, they'd quit making cents and nickels, too.

just hang in there. collect all types of coins in mint quality, dont worry about the value in future. People dont invest in shares, just like that, we have to invest, then wait for years to get a good return. Just be patient for years together. After your patience will be rewarded.

warm wishes.

Morgans of long distance future? I don't think so -- the dollar coin has no purpose-- you cant even buy gum with one of these-- and people wont walk around with a pocket full of these-- around the turn of the century (1900) , you could DO something with a morgan IE, Corn Flakes 10 cents, hershey bar 2 cents, Oreo cookies 10 cents, you could give a morgan to a kid and he could go to the fair and ride all the rides! Dollar coin-- its outdated.

Coinstar...how does the purchasing power and purpose of the dollar coin reflect its future value? Morgan dollars were hated by the people of the period yet I believe now it's the number one collected coin. Anyway, if the dollar coin is outdated then why doesn't the US Mint stop printing dollar bills? Why doesn't Canada stop with their $1 coin? Even England has a 1 pound coin. Don't forget when you go the grocery store to buy a loaf of bread and it's $3 the store will allow you to use more than 1 coin to pay.
