In checking the market value of a coin.
I'm told the best way to do this is check the price of previous auctions.

For those not experienced in how to do so -

How about one of you expert Auction folk tell the rest of us the best way to do this.

You can look at ebay to check the completed auctions. Heritage also offers this service. Bowers and Merena has a past auction prices realized on their site, although it is harder to check specific coins.
Rest in Peace

When you do the searches on Heritage it really helps to open the specific auction and look at the coin. For the most part the pictures are very good and almost all have the zoom feature except for the older archived auctions (see how they compare to the coin you are looking at). It helps to compare the prices to the leading price guides to see the retail / wholesale angle. Mike

At one time there was Rome's prices realize catalog for auctions that came out every year and was pretty expensive too. Not sure if it's still published though.
