Here's a review of the app. http://droidmedic.com/2010/10/metal...pp-reviewed/

While the concept is neat, the practical application is rather lacking. The software has to be using the internal antenna of the cell phone as a coil. As for being able to distinguish between precious metals... It's no where near that sensitive.

Thanks JMerrick, it was the sensitivity issue that made me sceptical.

Wish that guy that did the testing with his phone knew there are virtually hundreds of different types of Stainless Steels. I wonder how that would work with the many varieties.

I have that metal detector app on my Droid. It uses the same magnetic sensors used to detect the docking station and belt holsters, not the antenna. It works "okay" but there is no way it can discriminate what kind of metal it is detecting.

Apparently the app uses the compass built into the iphone, so it can only be used to detect ferrous metals. I wouldn't worry unless you're mailing a valuable coin made of iron or nickel.

I have it on my droid2 also, it detects metal but doesn't detect Gold or Silver worth a dern. They may be able to detect a box full of steel cents but a gold St Gaudens will pass right by them without them ever knowing anything was in the box

Sadly, I have no gold coins to test with, but I can say this...

Gold class ring... nada.
Copper cent... nada.
Silver quarter... nada.

Metal file cabinet... bada-bing!

Suffice it to say you are not beachcombing with this app any time soon.
