A lady had a "2½ cent dollar coin, gold" to sell. (She mentioned that three times.)

When I called back, she said she already sold it...for $300. He tried to offer $250 for, but "it was worth $300."

One minute she doesn't know what she has, the next, she knows exactly what it's worth.

I'd rather pay a few dollars more and get a nice certified AU.

That's when I usually tell the seller "Gee... I'm really sorry to hear that. I was prepared to pay substantially more than that, provided the condition warranted it."

Then, I'm absolutely not interested anymore. Once the wheels in their minds start turning, they start devising all sorts of ways to back out of the other deal. Too bad.

It seems that there are still good buys from people who want to sell there gold or silver. Case in fact: women sold her unwanted gold and silver jewelry to gold and silver buyers who were at the Ramada inn. Her husband had been a coin collector and before he died told her what some of his coins were worth. She took the offers on the jewelry but they would not give her what she wanted for the coins. She called us as fellow coin collectors who new her husband. The prices were at least 5 years old. She sold us all we could afford and gave us the rest on a pay up when you can. What we bought was very collectible. Some like the modern commemorative were bought for 20% less than gold or silver value. She was happy, I was happy until I had to explain to my wife the withdrawal from our bank account. I am in the dog house but happy. LOL

I have a diamond ring I want to give to my son, its 14k and going to have to be re-sized from a 11 to about a 8, wonder how much they will charge me to do that since its taking away gold instead of adding it?

Depends entirely on your local market. If a jeweler has an in-house bench jeweler, it'll be cheaper than if they send it out to one who works for the trade.

Pawn shops often have bench jewelers to repair stuff they buy that's much better than scrap. If so, downsizing is no big deal.

I'd say $30 is a reasonable price for this five-minute job, maybe as little as ten bucks and he keeps the gold.
