Here is another I got from my friend, also found metal detecting just off of an oyster road. Unlike the other the date is on/under the portrait side. Portrait is flattened by the c/s on the reverse side. My best guess on the date is "180", "8" and "0" are fairly clear and you can make out the "1". It could be "1780" or "180?".

The c/s seems to be two "R"'s back to back under a Crown, and the c/s is right on the shield.

Any I.D. on the coin and the c/s?

I don't recognize that RR device, but the outline behind it is reminiscent of the Britannia figure, used on British coppers over a long period. The other side could be an effigy ... of anyone.
An "oyster road" ? is that a road to the oyster beds, or a road made of oyster shells ?

Peter
very fond of oysters

Thanks Peter, If it was a "R" back to back with a "P" then it would look just like the British "Royal Provicial" stampings I have seen. The guy who found it wondered if it was for "Royal Ranges" but the date places the coin well after the Revolutionary War, But it could be something from the War of 1812.

In southern/coastial Virginia it is very flat and swampy so most used boats to get around during the colonial period. A man by the name of Hampton set up a set of toll roads and now the area is known as The Hampton Roads area. With no gravel close by, oyster shels were used to pave the roads. It was found that these roads shed water well and the white shells were very easy to follow at night. Anyway, these old roads are also called Quarantine Roads as early new comers were taken to camps until they could show they were not sick.

I think I recognize the image of George III on his last 1806/07 issue.
This is what it used to look like (yours is a halfpenny, my image is of a penny but they look very similar)

So if I understand it, 1807 was the last year for this coin design? So my coin could be a 1800 to 1807?

No, this design was used only two years, 1806 and 1807. I have nothing on the counterstamp, sorry. (Although for some reason it looks Scandinavian to me.)

Thanks svslav, I will ramp up the magnification and see if I can make out a 6 or 7 after the 180?.
There are NOT alot of Scandinavians that came into that part of Virginia, or atleast they did not stay, but its a good line and I will see what I can find. Thanks again.
