*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Found this roll searching String & Son Jeffersons.... I know it's not an "error"....(or at least I don't think it is), but OBVIOUSLY it caught my eye ! My best guess is that someone was going to make a Hobo Nickel, and got so far into it, then decided that their "tapestry" was unfit to continue or something. Otherwise....dunno Any other possibilities ? ..... (by the way, there are some barely discernable numbers/letters stamped into the upper third of the coin, going from one side of the rim to the other....weird... ) Here's a few pics and one of the "normal" reverse. It has me puzzled as well. Perhaps you should have posted this in the 'variety/error' forum where other experts hang out. At first glance I was going to suggest struck through a die cap ... but those letters have to be PMD. Don't they? Sorry I can't help ... looking for the experts. David

I'm almost positive that I see the word "Monticello".

It was struck through a die cap, the reverse is stretched but still quite visible and the ghost image from the obverse capped die is beginning to show.

That's a nice roll find!
I would say struck through a late stage die cap, too.

AWESOME FIND! Look how the MONTICELLO letters just flow over the high point. Definate capped die and a nice one.

Well, I have to admit that it was my original/initial "hope" that this was something in the error world......but I did not dare have much hope in that. Too many times before when I "thought" I had something, which turned out to be nothing....common....and valueless.....and only interesting until you're "educated" by others to the contrary. Then, of course sad or embarrassed that it wasn't "something". I'm GLAD TO FIND OUT THAT IT'S SOMETHING ! .... So...... Am I going to Hawaii or putting $5.00 in my gas tank ? ... Kidding....but I think I'll put this into a 2x2, or encapsulate it in a plastic cointain or something, now that my expert CCF friends have weighed in here, and I now know what this is ! My first Mint error........ .....What a feelin' ! ....

So......seriously..... "Hawaii" or "$5.00 at the pumps" ..... Nawww....but, obviously I know absolutely NOTHING about errors and very little about varieties. I don't own any of either.....until now I guess ! ... Would anyone weigh in and give an estimated rough guess as to the value of this coin please ? I'm not an ebay person..... and I navigated a couple of sites with similar things, but I can't really find anything that looks quite like "this" one. I noticed that on one site, they were selling "slabbed & graded" ones ...... Something " I " should do ? I'm completely naked and uneducated with any coins in this "arena". Some more insight and potential value approximations would be awesome please ! ... ...

I'm not an expert on errors by any means. I just like them. I've paid up to $50 for similar coins. Like anything else coins are only worth what someone will pay. To the right person you could get a nice chunk of change. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it. Personally I'd put it in your collection, its just a cool find regardless of its market value.

So.... "up to" $50.00. Hmmmm..... No Hawaii trip then... Well, that really wouldn't be worth being sent off to be slabbed & graded then, I guess. Is everyones summation "up to" $50.00 ?......

Just take this as just another opinion eaglefoot, but I would put it in about the $10-15 range.

So a minimum of $10.00 then......that's still cool ! This will still be a nice addition to my collection, even if it won't pay for a trip to Hawaii for me and my family !...
