My friends father gave me a box yesterday. I opened to find an actual die from the mint, a keel boat nickel that was pressed with the die on the first day of mincing and a certificate of authenticity.
I've never seen one before, any ideas on what its worth? After work today ill try to take pictures and post them.

The full set for a nickel die set with the die, nickel, COA, and original box usually goes anywhere btween $30-$60... Some people like them, while others don't. The reason some don't like it is because the mint destroys the end of the die(the design) to prevent counterfeiters from using them.Personally, I will get one eventually. State Quarter die sets are available too.

Thanks for the info. I just thought it was cool of my friends dad to pick it up for me. He wouldn't let me pay for it or tell me how much it was. He was in a resale shop and saw it so he grabbed it.

Usually US mint dies come in one of three tyoes, proof dies from 1968 that have had the faces "puddled" with a torch (these sometimes show a little detail.), the dies from the coin and die sets that have had the entire die face ground off, and 1996 olympic coins that have just had an X cut across the faces leaving most of the detail intact. The first two types are fairly easy to find and sell for $30 or so. The Olympic dies are highly desired and will typically bring $500 or more. Early US mint dies are very rarely available and considerably more expensive.

I have a pair of US Quarter dies from 1968-S with COA's and partial engravings still viewable on the obv and rev. I bought them years ago and found them in a box. Is there a way to value these?
