When I go into a dealer's shop I always look for the bins that hold a bulk coin assortment, could be full of only Canadian or a mixture of foreign, junk silver, etc. I always, repeat always ask what the price will be prior to me starting to look through the bin. Nothing irks me more than going through the bin, finding some nice coins that I would like to have and then the dealer gets out his world price guide and determines the price based on the grade he thinks it is. I have done all the work of pulling out the coins that I like and he now wants to charge me full retail! Honestly, if you are like me, I just want to bury the coins back into the pile and let him sort through them himself. I avoid these shops from then on, what about you?

I probably would do the same as you. It is too bad that the dealer might have lost a customer for life over the first deal. Hopefully there are other coin dealers in your area to buy coin supplies from..... I know that one of my character defects would not let me put profit in that dealers pocket....

Colhand1, If the dealer feels the coins are so valuable why does he not look through them himself. Maybe he could hire some else to help out. The dealers I buy from have their bins clearly labeled. They will also give me about 25% discount without even asking. Thats why I will keep going back.

junk bins are aalways a good idea to check through....I was in a shop when a young person found a 1925 penny in the junk bin....the dealer choked but sold it for the 35 cents marked on the bin....I wonder if I had not been there if he would have?

My friendly dealer has bins with various dollar amounts per coin labelled on each bin. They range from 10c per coin to $10 per coin. Has about six bins. There is no need to negotiate per coin. At these price levels, it would be a waste of time for both of us.

Similar to buying screws a hardware store.
