Just wanted to to start a discussion with everyone here about why, lately on CCF, buyers think they are entitled to a 20% discount off spot prices on silver?

In the past I have always sold things here at what I believe to be a fair price for all involved. I look at what the market price is, what the item is selling on ebay for (not listed prices, but actually completed auction prices). I then reduce that by about 7% to 9%. ebay and Paypal usually take that much anyway...so in essence I am getting about the same net amount, but members here are getting a discount from what they would pay on ebay or in a coin shop most of the time.

Lately whenever I list silver for sale here, it is always the same story...people sending me low ball offers for 20% less than spot like they are doing me a favor, by taking it off my hands.

Reminds me of when an antique shop came to my grandma's house when I was a kid. They charged her $25 to take a 100 year old China Cabinet away. It was junk after all, why would they pay her for it.

Just wondering what others thought? I for one will take the 6% premium on ebay and pay the 9% fee...I will still be way ahead of the offers I got yesterday evening.

MINT_MARQ, you can't blame them for trying...after all it is customary to haggle (for some people). I don't have a problem with just saying: "No thank you" and moving on. You can always state "Firm" when posting and don't even respond to any lowball offers. But as far as getting the most money, I say go where you can and don't think anything about it.

Whenever I sell on ebay, it comes out to 20% that ebay/paypal take out for fees. So, if you are selling silver on this site and state you are going to list whatever doesn't sell here on ebay, I can see why members are offering you 20% less.

I'm not saying it's fair or unfair to the seller or buyer to do this but I can see the reasons to agree/disagree from both parties angles. At current melt I'm able to buy silver for 18x face from a local dealer when I buy large amounts, and 20x from my local coin shop. If I choose to sell I can drive an 1 1/2hrs to a shop that pays current melt.

Everyone has there own idea of what's fair and unfair. If someone is sending you an offer you don't think is reasonable I wouldn't take it personal and be angered by it. It's simply them reading you want to sell something and they are letting you know what they are willing to pay for it. I've often sent offers to members to buy things for less than the price they are asking. Sometimes my offer is accepted if they don't get what they are asking for, other times they'll thank me for the offer but decline and state they'd rather hold it and try to sell at another time. Either way it goes it shouldn't be taken personal or anger you.

If that's true, you're doing something seriously wrong.

I would think it a variety of factors.

If people are buying silver for silver sake.

Silver has seen a quick rise, and I've noticed a lot more offering in say the last week here. So there's competition. Also with the volatility I would think the people buying silver for silver' sake are trying to build is some safeguard.

ebay will cost you %12. 9% final fee atm, plus %3 paypal which nearly every user on there uses.

If a coin collector is trying to buy your silver, I expect them to be trying to buy it as cheap as possible because silver is high atm and they don't really have plans to sell it.

Also, as Maineman said, people like to haggle. No reason to get bent out of shape, just say no, counteroffer, or go to ebay with it and get more there if you think you can.

Nobody said I was angry.

If I was angry I would have brought my peeps with me

I'm just looking for a discussion as to why some here feel they are entitled to a 20% discount. They can ask all they want...and they may get if someone wants a quick sale. Like I need money for my car's transmission tomorrow.

I also want to hear from people who are selling at such deep discounts when ebay is only a couple clicks away.

As far as fees...

ebay $0.50 insertion fee + Final Value fee 9.0% of sale price (maximum charge $50.00)

Paypal 2.9% + $0.30

So if I sold the $2157 worth of silver I had listed here for spot on ebay my fee would have been $112.85 or 5.23% + I would have charged for shipping and insurance.

I listed it here for $2,060.00 with free shipping.

Just my 3 cent nickel

I haven't sold coins before but recently sold a bunch of lift tickets and 20% was what I payed in fees after all was done. I know they charge different % for different items, sorry for the misunderstanding.

And to MINT_MARQ,

Sorry for assuming you were angered by the offers, it's hard to tell emotion when reading. I often make the same mistake when reading texts from family and friends.

Honestly, I think just a firm but polite statement in the original post would stop it.

For the most part I dont mind giving a discount especially if someone is buying a big lot as the money goes right back into some collectable coins for my collection and plus I got most of mine when silver was at 16-18 an oz so I can pass a little off to some people. The dollars on the other hand I bought in a huge lot and go caught up in the bidding and payed around 18each for 200 morgans/peace, but with the price of silver at about 34 melt is aroun 26-27 so I sold a few in a bigger lot for 24 each. The only thing I wouldnt due is sell for what I got it for or under as it makes no sense. plus I hate waiting a week or so to get my money from ebay, its a little annoying and cant spend the money right away for other coins I want for my collection

Another reason may be the size of market here. ebay is much larger. I know there's some dealers here who may drop 2k on some silver, but there's far more on ebay. Also, what were you selling? I know a lot o people offer lower on junk silver coins because of metal lose due to wear. Just trying to think of reasons.

I think Bobby is right...in the future I will make sure to note that my price is firm.

This always surprises me. My local coin shop always charges spot plus on their silver, "Junk" and bullion alike.

I wish I had a local dealer that charged 26% less than spot....I would be buying and flipping until the cows come home.

Just part of the buying/selling talk. I guess people lowball thinking there is a bigger chance of getting ripped off, as opposed to paying above spot from a dealer.

I think close to spot is more than fair though, and 20% is definitely asking way too much.

Believe it or not most of the coins in there are just common date coins in good condition. There is a small amount of no-date stuff, but there's occasionally the new silver State Quarters in near mint.

I guess they think 20% off spot is a "reasonable offer near spot." I, personally, do not.

Then again, if bvalania's 18x-20x face is representative of "the market," there's your 20%. I can't get that around me though.

Despite the ubiquitous "we're family here" line, from what I've seen in my short time, that doesn't produce favorable pricing for buyers or sellers all that often. Good luck with your sale. Don't let the lowballers get under your skin. I understand, but life's too short to stress out about such things.

I am so new I have not taken the time to check out the deals here on site, sounds like I am missing out, even without having to haggle down 20%, lol....

The difference between me, and the most of the humans, I try an walk a mile in another mans shoes, put myself in their situation. I bar tend for example....Don't come up to my bar 45 minutes after last call, and give me grief for not re-opening an selling you some drinks when I am cleaning up about to leave, when I am trying to go home an see my family. Just like if I get something to eat on way home, I refuse to bother a place as they close, because I know what it is like, been in bus my entire life, I put myself in that persons shoes, and I understand that they want to close up shop an leave....

Same with buying silver an gold. I know the dealer has to make a little something, with paypal fees, ebay fees, shipping, is there anything left on the bone, so I don't mind paying a bit more for spot, esp if you provide great product and fast shipping. In which case you will likely get repeat bus. Same again in rest industry, I would much rather serve a good regular I know an see often, as opposed to some tourist passing through that I will never see again...
