I say bust it up and drive up the value of the remaining mint sets!

It all depends on why you bought it to begin with. Did you buy it to have a small date mint set? Or did you buy it to fill some holes?

I originally bought one to fill the 70-S Small Date and 70-D Kennedy slots in my album, but once I got it I was reluctant to bust it up.

So I bought another one and busted it up! I guess I wanted both.

I wouldn't be able to get the scissors in my hands fast enough ! ...

Of course, my preference would be purchase TWO.....to keep one intact and cut the other one open....

I have a similar dilemma. I have just purchased a slabbed 1914D LWC. Do I break the slab for my album? In my case I use 2x2 coin flips. To fill my spot in my album I use a photo copy of my coin and put this in the 2X2. Then I safely put away my slabbed coins in a secure spot. This is a better solution than breaking open a slab. I feel in the long run you should not break open a mint set. If you need the coin for an album then I would buy a second one.

A less expensive one for the album, perhaps.

Again, are you a plastic collector or a coin collector?
I have purchased slabbed coins, proof sets, uncirculated sets but I am a coin colletor and my coins go into Albums. Those slabs just don't fit in my Album so I break out the coins and throw away the plastic.
If you collect plastic, that's one thing. If you collect coins, that is something else.
If you are planning on selling your coins in the future, keep the slabbed stuff as is.
If you are a coin colletor and collect for yourself, for now, for FUN, break open all those silly pieces of plastic and discard that stuff.

If the goal is to fill two holes in an album, then cut away.

Great idea. I suggest you look for an Uncirculated set of the 2009 ones for her also. Oddly enough someday she may always think of you when she sees those.
