According to the Red Book, the mintage is 837,000. But there's no info on how many of the MM above bow and MM below bow exits. Does anyone else know?

I came a across this coin at an online dealer and its very eye catching. Dealer grade is MS63 and asking price is $229. Is there a price difference depending on the MM location? I'm not planning on buying it but its rather pretty!! I would like to know your opinion.

Sorry shatsi, I looked all over the internet and couldn't find any information on this. I even went to the National Archives and the Mints website. I think you can get the information from the NA but have to pay for it and no telling how long it would take before you actually got it and when gotten it would be what you are looking for.

Hello Shatsi. Walter Breen says there are 475,000 with mm above wreath, (he says "in wreath") and 362,000 with mm below wreath. My Red Book shows same value in all grades for both types.

Al blythe gives the same numbers that adobero1 quoted from Breen in his Complete Guide on Liberty Seated half dimes. Of course, he may have gotten his numbers from Breen and who knows where Breen got them. Personally, I have noticed the below wreath type a bit more often so the numbers seem about right.

That's a nice looking coin, but the picture makes it look like there is too much chatter to give it an MS63. It could look better in hand or in a bigger picture. I bought a PCGS MS63 below wreath example about a year ago for around $50 less than that dealer is asking, so I think I would keep looking if I were you.

I've decided to pass. I was considering it as it has great appeal but I don't have to buy it. I'm not looking for a particular grade. Heritage has one certified MS62 by ANACS. I'll try my luck in that.

You could probably get a good idea of relative scarcity by looking at the ratio of "above bow" to "below bow" coins in the population census of PCGS or NGC. Because of crackouts it probably wouldn't give an accurate count, but the chances are that the ratios they have graded are a pretty good indicator of relative availability.

Hi Shatsi, I know this is off topic, but how did you get a photo of my dog Shadow? He is a Great Pyrhenes/Lab mix and a great buddy. When I get photographically enhanced, I'll slip in a pic among my coin photos.

by the way, very nice Half Dime, sorry you missed it...there will surely be another.

Dennis
