Here are two different $20 St Gaudens I saw online. One is a MS66 and the other is MS65. To my untrained eye, they look really close, but as I put them side by side, I can see differences (both PCGS). I have looked at similarly graded coins from other grading companies and am surprised the range of condition (I guess there must be a range that they use for a certain grade, some being at the top and others barely making it. I can also see how subjective this might be, depending on how good or bad a day the grader is having.). I see much worse looking coins in general, and I even saw a NGC MS65 that wasn't close to a lot of others I've seen in the last day or so.

What do you all think? I'll tell you later which is which. I'm trying to learn about grading, and I'm trying to get better as I look at different grades. I am seeing more wear and scratches, etc. which I know affects value and grading. Practice, practice practice, right?

Here they are:

First, the fronts:

33.6 KB

Image: $20-St-Gaudens' 1924 St Gauden $20 Front.jpg
35.56 KB

And now the backs:

33.61 KB

34.68 KB

No matter what, they are both beautiful coins.

I know nothing about these coins but I will guess that the 1925 is the MS-66 . One thing you will notice when you get a trained eye is even in the same grade there will be fluctuations in the overall look because there are coins that barely made the grade then there are coins that almost made the next grade up but barely missed it. They call the coins that are nice for the grade PQ coins and those are the coins that you will want because they will always bring more money in the future. The reason I am stating the money thing is because if I remember correctly you are the one who stated this is more of an investment than a hobby for you at this time. There will always be some people that just do not know how to grade and will go by what the label says but the more experienced collector will always pay more for a PQ coin than they will a slider (a coin that barely made the grade). I hope this helps you understand how it works and if not I am sure someone else will be able to explain it better for you if you ask more questions

I'm with you on that one. I, too, would say that the 1925 is the higher grade.

To my untrained eye there are too many bag marks on the 24 for it to grade MS66 so I will concur with Bryan and Snooba

Bryan,

Thanks for those comments. You're right on the investment vs. collecting at this point. I am interested in the coins for collecting, but the investment aspect is very important too.

Now, for the answer.

The 1924 coin is the MS66. I would have thought that the 1925 was MS66 too, but when I looked at them side by side it looks like the 1924 has sharper lines. It is not as clean a coin and I think that is why I thought it would be the lower grade. I see a small scratch on the back of the 1924coin under the motto and it looks like a couple of scratches under the eagle on the light rays. And the top of the wing above the eagles head looks more worn on the 1925. Other than that, not much difference in them. I like the 1925 better because it is so much brighter.

Would you say the 1924 coin has toning? Still trying to get a handle on that one.

Here is another coin, graded by NGC that is MS65 but looks a lot worse than both of these coins:

69.48 KB

Image: $20-St-Gaudens' 1927 St Gauden $20 Back.jpg
66.79 KB

Also, where are the bag marks on the 1924 coin? I want to learn more on what these look like as well. Maybe the NGC coin has bag marks on it?
