Okay, I'm practicing again. I graded this one EF-40 - my reasoning: I've viewed it in hand, in the scan, and under magnification, and noted the following -

Obverse - slight wear on hair above date, forehead and below ear, a good deal of wear above ear, pits and scratches on Liberty's face and neck, wear on high points of cap, cotton bolls and leaves, and the mint luster is pretty well gone except around the lettering and stars.

Reverse - almost all feathers on breast gone, legs and wings show wear as does the head and neck area, high points of wreath show some wear, scratches in field, mint luster only around lettering.

So, with all that said, how close do you think I am to the proper grade? And, please, if you disagree with my estimate, give the resaoning behind your decision. Thanks.

Ralph

By George, Ralph, I think you've got it! I'd go along with the range of EF-40 to -45 although it might drop down to a VF-35 at PCGS which in the past couple years has deflated many grades and egos. The degree of marks on Liberty's face might keep it down. Starting off with a sharp strike typical of the S mint, you've described the wear very nicely.

Very good assessment!
