The folks here might enjoy this photo collection (1,300 plus) of counterfeits covering most aspects of numismatics. A little bit of everything. Click onto the photostream or review the individual sets and photos. PCGS appears to be the choice of the Chinese TPG forgers. Hundreds pictured.

wow, that is very interesting. I am sure people tend not to look too closely for counterfeits when they are in pcgs holders. Buy the coin, not the holder becomes even more important

the problem is, people want any key coin in a top TPG holder and these counterfeiters know this so if you do not do the homework to track down the original sale on Heritage like this guy has done you can get burnt because you think its authentic because its been graded by a top TPG. Plastic does have its place in the hobby and authentication is the main one it plays

If 1 does research, isn't there numbers on each pcgs graded coin that can be researched to see if its real or not?

Indeed .... you can always check on a PCGS coin by entering the certification number here:

http://www.pcgs.com/CERT/html

However ... it would be a simple matter for the counterfeiter to just use a valid cert for the coin they are faking. Two examples from the link ....

MS63 Lafayette Dollar, Cert #12216486 does not return a valid entry through the PCGS verification link. In this case the forger simple made the number up.

AU58 Isabella Quarter Cert #1444610 returns a valid AU58 Isabella entry. In this case the forger was smart enough to catch a photo somewhere (EBay?) of the actual coin and simply put the correct cert# on the fake holder.

Depressing indeed.

I tried one of the dollars by NGC and the number checked out fine. There was no picture on the NGC website for the coin. Scary stuff!

However this all is nothing new. The market has been flooded with counterfeits for a long time now. And as people are now finding out, not only the coins but the slabs they are in are also fakes. It is very possible that many, many collectors have counterfeit coins and in slabs in their collections and don't know it. One dealer I know was telling me he had some in his inventory for a long time before hd found out they were fakes.

Yes but if there are a few hundred or even thousands with the same numbers what does that prove. Rememeber there are serial numbers on paper currency and that too makes no difference.
And one dealer showed me a slab he opened and replace the coin inside for the fun of it and I could not detect how he did that. This too means due to the massive growth in this hobby, faked everything is growing accordingly. Soon enought China will start counterfeiting the older Red Books.

I understand many of these come from Heritage or Teletrade
