I bought a stack of coins at auction recently & found an unusual 1854 one cent. The head & the tail of the coin have reversed images. Realy odd. Can anyone explain?

First off, are you sure it's copper? Second, a cent like that (not necessarily how yours was made) can be made by squishing a copper planchet between Two Cents or using Two Cents on either side to make a mold for casing... Can't really say how your coin came into existence. But there are two possibilities.

I'd say possibly a contemporary counterfeit made by squeezing a blank between Two Cents. At one time I had a fake Shield nickel made from lead that was created that way.

weight and mm might help. looks awful sharp to be made in a household vice.

I think you are correct,it will be a forgery, its too old to be floating around like that since 1854. Thank you so much for your replies, much appreciated. Trixie.

But still, pretty cool really! Let see now...if you made two of those, then squished another softer copper between them, you'd have...a counterfeit! That's not the counterfeit, it's the die for making it! Okay, probably not, but it's a theory anyway!

If they were going to use that as a die, why make it two sided? Wouldn't two sigle sided dies work better?

Yeah, I'd love to know what the composition is. Must be soft and at the time unvaluable... So copper doesn't make sense... Then you're not really gaining anything. What's the weight and size? Is it roughly equivalent in any way to a correctly minted cent? Neat coin Trixie, thanks for posting!

You would think it would be softer than copper assuming the "die" was copper. Neat item.

Sorry I have not replied by now, I have been using another forum. I still have this interesting coin in my collection.
I think it is made from nickel. Weight 11.78grms/1/3oz. Dia 29mm.

Nickel is very hard; I don't see anyone pounding a copper penny into a nickel planchet and getting that much detail. That is a shame, they must have destroyed two nice large cents just to create that...
