My dad just found a 2004 S Nickel and looks to be a proof to me. Do you think someone just broke open a set and spent it? Stupid if they did, they ruined a good coin. Take a look

This is a proof-strike Jefferson ... and agree as well that someone broke it out of a set and spent it. It happens on occasion.

Just to clarify a bit on Jefferson Proofs ...

Proof Jefferson 1938 through 1964 were struck in Philadelphia and do not have a mint mark (exception of the 1942-P War Silver proof).

There were no proof strike Jefferson (or any proof for that matter) 1965, 1966 and 1967.

Proof Jefferson have been minted in San Francisco since 1968 and all have the 's' mm on the obverse.

The last circulation strike San Francisco Jefferson was minted in 1970 ..... so there are exactly 3 years (1968, 1969 and 1970) where you can find both circulation-strike and proof-strike 's' mm Jefferson.

All Jefferson proof minted from 1968 to now are from San Francisco ... including yours.

Seems like every week there are a few Impaired Proofs (proofs that are found in circulation) found... I know I have pulled out 4 or 5 just in the last couple months... Seems like there are alot of people that just don't like Jefferson nickels...

nice....they did ruin a good coin, but it happens a lot. I found a 81-s last year in my change...just barely circulated so it still looks really nice

The Nickels could be "refugees" from broken lower-grade Silver Proof Sets where the Silver coins were sold for melt value.

Ex: 2004 Silver Proof Set, original issue price $37.95

Today, the seven silver coins in that set alone are worth about $48 in melt value.
