Hi

I am trying to determine if the San Marino BU sets are worth buying at issue price? I heard a lot of these coins can be quite expensive and only some such as the 2e commemorative coins hold their value and even go up in price.

If I was to be able to get the current years UNC BU set at issue price is it likely I could get it cheaper on ebay in a couple of years?

Opinions would be appreciated..

San Marino Euro coins -- very interesting subject.

The UNC BU sets (containing the 8 Euro coin denominations made for circulation) will not go below issue price. At least, I cannot see that happening for the foreseeable future.
However, many folks paid a lot for them in the first years and have to come to grips with the fact, that the price they paid was too high and they will not be able to sell them for it.
This is especially true for the San Marino Sets dubbed "Mini Series."
Example: The 2002 BU set containing the 20c, 50c, 1 and 2 Euro coins. Dealers still want around 65 Euros for them, but on German ebay you can get those sets for 30 to 35 Euros (at least that was the case a few months ago).

Early 2 Euro CC coins are still quite expensive, but the newer issues have gone down in price considerably. Still, if you have "money to burn" you can do no wrong here.

Sorry, can't help you with them, because I don't collect them and I never had interest in them.
Because of the silver coin this sets tend to be with the NCLT crowd, so you need to be extra careful, as there has been a lot of volatility in prices.

But again, I don't think even those sets will go below issue price.

Anyway I don't think you will get San Marino BU Sets below issue price, since the quantity mint is so few in respect to all other euro coins.

I'm in the euro area too, and do collect euro coins, but as a collector rather than an investor. In my opinion a price/value forecast for the next couple of years is impossible anyway, but of course the average value of a BU set may one day be below the issue price. Not very likely though.
