I've decided that I would like to get some of my better coins graded by a trusted coin grading service. My research into this has me leaning very stongly with PCGS as the most trusted name to go with.

Their webpage shows that I have to either be a member or have my coins sent in via a dealer that is a member. I live a considerable distance from any coin dealer, so I wondering how the membership route works. I see different levels of yearly memberships I can choose from, however that vs what you get with it is not clearly understood by me.

Also, the charts for the cost of different coin attributes do not make much sense to me either.

In short, I am a total child to coin grading. Any advise and/or explaination from someone with experience would be greatly appreciated.

The top level membership at $199 gets you in for 1 year and includes 8 free submissions. The second level gets you 4 free submissions which is better if you submit mostly moderns. The $299 membership includes the top level and 1 year of CoinFacts.

Hope this helps!

Free is a marketing term. By the time you check all the boxes and jump though all the hoops it's going to cost you a lot more than you think per coin. At $199 you're already at $25 per coin. There's no free about it. A dealer that charges a nominal fee (I pay $25 flat for ANY coin) and gas might just be cheaper.

Make sure the coins you're grading will be worth at least $150 each after being slabbed. If there's any doubt, you're throwing away your money. The number of $5 slabbed coins on the market is pretty comical IMO.

Also, search for slabbed coins similar to those you have. Sometimes it's a LOT cheaper to sell your coin raw and buy a slabbed example on the market. That is unless you have love for the coins you want graded. LOL ...but you might also end up with a nicer coin.

They plan it that way. Believe me when I tell you.
