My Grandfather passed on to me some coins that he said my grandmother collected in the 60's. I would appreciate any info you could give me or a site that I can research these coins.
Description:
Appears to be copper, about the size of a quarter, They have old cars on one side of them and at the bottom a date (i presume is the car's model). at the top is the car's make (exp. Studebaker) Spelling). On the otherside is the Make of the car written in the center of the coin. I'm not a collector, but would love to know more about these coins.
Sorry No Pic Available, I'm on a work PC

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully Cwtokenman will be around soon. He seems to know everything there is to know about tokens and he should be able to help you. If you can post pictures when you get home, that would be a great help.

This sounds like a Franklin Mint product. They offered many such items in Brass, Copper, and Silver over the years. They carry a small premium, but usually bring the best money at car shows.

Could be tokens from manufacturers given out at Auto Shows.... Welcome "wickedlester"! I can't wait to see your avastar and a explaination of your nickname (if you willing to share it!) under the nicknames thread. Mike

Thanks for the info. I'll try to post a pic of one of the coins/tokens a little later.
Is there a site that I could research to see if these are franklin mint. or carshow tokens?
The Username is simple really. I'll post it in the appropriate forum.

Well, I couldn't locate the correct forum for explaining my username so here goes. I'm enjoy listening to different kinds of music. I've seen many concert. Ranging from Paul McCartny to Led Zeplin to Dr. Ralph Stanley. My favorite band is "KISS" because of there stage shows. KISS was originaly "Wickedlester" before hitting the bigtime in the 70's. Wickedlester is just something that is easy for me to remember and it sometimes gets people's attention and thus a discussion about my favorite band

I may actually know the answer to this one. They sound like the "coins" we used to get from shell gas staions. they had a car series and a presidential series. whenever you got gas they would give you a token to put in you punch book given out by shell. I completed the car series and had almost all the presidens. I think it stopped at Johnson.(1968) I still se some at antique shows. a nice book sells for $25-30.00 am I close ?

I do remember my grandfather saying something about getting these at a gas station. That is a great help and thanks for posting the ebay link. I will confirm this with him when I get home this evening.

Ok, I just looked at the ebay link. Those appear to be very similar if not exactly like the coins/tokens I have. Does anyone have a pic. of the Gas Station Tokens Referenced earlier? I would like to compare my coins to them. P.S. This site rocks. You all have been a great help in my search. This may have just sparked an interest in coin collecting for me. Keep the info coming. Camera at home was out of batteries last night, will see about getting some batteries to post a pic.

Not exactly "car" tokens, but here are other Shell Gas Station tokens. All seem to have the same basic diagnostics. Does the token itself match these? Notice the small denticles around the edge. No dimensions, but most gas station tokens I have seen are just larger than a quarter dollar.

That's What I have only mine are tarnished. Thanks guys/gals.
Is there a thread on cleaning this type of coin?
These are probley not worth a lot in real dollars, but they are centemental to me. Grandmother passed away a couple months ago and I can remember her getting these out and as a child I thought they were the neatest thing hehe. How great it was to be young and excited by the simplest things.

Since these are tokens, and not coins, I am not sure if cleaning is good or bad. If these are strictly for your enjoyment and to be passed down through the family, I would suggest cleaning them. First you need to find out what kind of metal it is.
Cleaners for metals: Copper: MS-70 Silver: Jewel Luster, KoinPro.
Try not to rub them with a cloth or rag. Also refrain from using soaps or harsh cleaners. Stop by any coin shop and you will find some good cleaners.

The Shell tokens were issued in both aluminum and bronze and all of them were 26mm.
