I'm referring to the copperish coloring of the front
and what happened to the back

The coppery color is either toning or it's just dirty. The reverse is PMD.IMHO

Somebody damaged the coin with a rotating wire brush. You can see the corresponding scratch marks on the obverse rim that would have been caused by the wire hitting the obverse rim as well.

The coin was damaged.

Also resembles the damage a coin sorting and counting machine can do. It has a large heavy metal wheel that rotates. When a coin gets stuck against the wheel, it'll cause severe friction on the side touching. Definitely PMD!
