being at the register for a long time, I'm always on the lookout for coins. I guess what I'm asking is what I should be looking for. anything out of the ordinary.
i have been looking for silver quarters/dimes, earlier than '55 nickels, wheaties, extra leaf wisconsins, and double tree'd minnesota's. I'm gonna start bringing my 10x magnifier, but I need some advice on what I should be looking for in newer dated coins, such as key double die dates.
thanks, I really appreciate it. -Madness

I happen to believe you are on the right track now, but here is some advice I'm sure you should be aware of. Don't let the boss catch you taking that much time at the register!

I would pick up volume 1 and 2 of the Cherry Pickers Guide, as well as a Red Book...these three items will tell you what is worth snagging. I would tell you that any pre 64 dime, quarter, half or dollar, you should immediately swap out as they are worth at least 7 times face just in silver content. As for the rest, it depends if you are looking to make money or make a collection...you could very easily put together a circulated penny, nickel, dime, quarter set of modern coins from the till... You have to decide what you want to do, then READ, then start buying... just my $.02 Bryan

Keep nickels, dimes, and quarters from 1982 and 1983 in higher grades. Watch for the 1982 dime w/o a mint mark some are missing the P.

any known errors on State Quarters I should know about besides on the wisconsin and minnesota? im more looking into error coins right now. I feel it to be a much more interesting field of collecting - more of a surprise to what you find. ive researched into the 1995 doubled lincoln, which I'm going to be putting a lot of attention towards now.

Pick out anything that catches your eye. I agree with brianb, with this kind of access you could easily put together modern circulated coin sets. Just make sure the register count doesn't get too short. If you're into collecting paper money, getting a nice star note is always fun...

the only way you would ever find a 55 dd Lincoln Cent in circulation is if you were the first one at the register after some kid robbed his daddy's coin collection because there aren't any in circulation as far as I know and everyone and their brother knows about this coin and is looking for it. Of course this is just my opinion and someone else may have a different one but I think you would have better chances of winning the lottery than finding a 55 DD in change

quote: 1995 doubled lincoln
ive already wasted my time looking for 55 DD's in circulation >_<. under realization that the coin is too rare to find, I gave up looking for it. I was talking to a friend of mine at school today and she had told me that there was some speculation over the georgia State Quarter. is there some error commonly found on that coin that I dont know about? as far as the modern circulation sets go... is it worth it? I already have modern sets of the lincolns, but some of the coins are in bad shape. for some reason I cant find a good luster'd 1998 penny with no mintmark. I'm thinking about moving into the nickel market... I enjoy finding wartimes much more than finding wheaties - plus I've been having much better luck. I think its cause the wheats are so obvious from the memorial reverse. thanks for the replies! -Madness

I'm reminded of the first year I was married -- 40 years ago -- and that I worked in a drug store that summer. I can still remember the cash register being filled with silver!
If I found anything noteworthy, I have forgotten what it was.
Wish I knew then what I know now.

Scott Travers put out a 1909-s vdb and a 1914-d wheatie into circulation to get more people interested, so be on the lookout for those. Also, the Oregon quarter also has some sort of DDR.
