The majority of my errors have been found by noodling through coins from either the pokies (slot machines) or from rolls that I get from the bank. I have found some significant/magnificent planchett errors, a few off centres (broadstrikes), a truly beautiful unc partial collar $1, and a host of Cuds. In particular, I have a significant number of Cuds that we call rabbit ears, where there is a Cud behind the ear of the smallest kangaroo on the $1 coin. I have even found an exceptionally well made counterfeit $2 coin.

More recently, I have been going through new rolls of coins (all denominations). There is nothing as lovely as finding an uncirculated error coin. And the bonus is that here is usually more than one of the same error, given that they generally all come from the same minting run.

The very best source for these type of errors is the secondary market,, error coin dealers ,, the reason for this is simple,, they have the opportunity to accumulate these types of coins,, most people who are not collectors (which is the vast majority of the population) will take these coins to dealers when they find them in change or whatever means they come by them.

I have found a few in rolls, and even had a couple handed to me by checkers and or cashiers,,but the chances of developing a series collection of these types of coins in that manner is very slight.

The only place I can get uncirculated rolls from is the National Australia Bank (NAB). They get their rolls from Armaguard, who in turn get them from bagged quantities from the Royal Australian Mint (RAM).

I understand that Woolworths also get their rolls from Armaguard. I know at least one Aussie Coin Forum member who gets his rolls from them. You will need to develop some sort of relationship with the duty manager.

CHUBB also provide new rolls (certainly $1). Secretsquirrel has a number of 2005 MOR for sale on emuauctions.com.au. However, I don't know who they provide their rolls to. Perhaps the Commonwealth Bank?

It costs me nothing (in charges) to get rolls from the NAB as I am a customer. (Visa card). I also have a mastercard that qualifies me as a Westpac customer. I often get circulated rolls from them. I simply lie to the Commonwealth Bank telling them I left my card at home . I cash all my coins in at the St George Bank (home loan). They don't have rolls of any kind. They bag everything.

The NAB has a form that you can fax to them requesting a quantity of coins. I order some every day. They have a pre-arranged collection point so I don't have to wait in a queue. On the form I ask for 'new rolls' if they have them. They teller is awar of what I'm after and usually goes out of her way to oblige. I know at times she has asked other tellers if they have any new rolls. If there are no new rolls, I simply look for circulated errors.
