. 1920 penny. It has dots above and below the scrolls.... If this coin is in VF+ is $35 U.S. a fair price? Its color is a bit too light, but otherwise trouble free. My books on these varieties say very little and nothing about demand. .

a quick look at ebay.Oz shows seven for sale with "buy it now" prices. None of them is as good as yours, which might be justified as an EF, because of the eight pearls. I must see if I can find my grading book ... Back to ebay: The lowest asking price is $35, and four of them are over $100. One for auction has no bids yet: looks like it's been soaked in acid. On that basis: as a buyer, snap it up; as a seller, you won't have to wait long ... back to grading: the ANDA notes say of EF - "On George V coins, the Centre Diamond in the band of the Monarchs crown should be well raised, and the pearls to the left of it should be well separated.". So, Maybe yours is EF+ see: http://www.anda.com.au/documents/re...%20coins.pdfPeter in Darwin

Looks OK to me, but the colour bothers me a little.
How long have had it for, and where did you get it?
A 1920 plain with no dots is listed a s a big dollar item.

https://goccf.com/t/83636#684327Your answer is very appreciated.... It never entered my mind to check ebay, a senior moment I guess. I downgraded to a VF+ because of the coin funky color, but for grade alone it probably is EF, as you said. Again thanks.

https://goccf.com/t/83636#684330Thanks for your interest ......The color bothers me too. I found this coin, probably 30 years ago in a dealers junk coin box. At that time world coins had few customers, (central U.S.) and they were glad to take $$ whatever they could get, not true anymore, that's for sure. I put in a 2x2 at that time, and just found it not long ago. Sounds crazy, but that's the story.

The normal colour for these coins is as Lincoln pennies for age. There can be varying amounts of mint red, according to the environment the coin has been in, or the Australian penny develops a rather pleasing glossy dark chocolate patina.
This coin has developed neither of these types of colour development.
the 1920 penny with no dots is listed at $2,000 in EF in Renniks Australian Coin and Banknote values, whilst the 1920 with a dot over the scroll, or a dot under the scroll, is listed at $200.
The temptation is there remove the dot from the more common coin, and make a die from that.
Renniks give a total mintage for all three 1920 pennies from Melbourne and Sydney Mints at 9.04 million. There is no breakdown given on this total.
I am not a specialist on Australian coins; I am into ancients and world coins of all ages up to mid 20th century.

A full moustache on that coin, hard to say from images but I'd say at least AU.

As above the colour is a little off, however this could just be the photo.
From my reference they say an UNC double dot has never been sighted ? This coin would come very close to aUNC / UNC my only concern is has it been cleaned ? Even so for the money I don't think you can go wrong. Even double would be still a good buy IMO.
Please update if you ended up getting it or not ?
