I am not sure about the broadcast schedule outside of the US and am aware that many people use a DVR, so I will not spoil it with too many details in this opening post. Last night's episode of Bones, titled "The Blackout in the Blizzard" featured coins. Part of the plot involved identifying some coin fragments. This opening post will serve as the SPOILER ALERT, so feel free to openly discuss the episode below.

Noticed that....good show. I have not looked it up but seemed like alot of metals in the analysis. They said bimetalic then mentioned (from memory) an aluminum steel core with a cupronickel plating (I think). What was the comp. of Chechyn(spelling?) rubles?

It was supposed to be Russian Rubles that were used as shrapnel in an Chechen IED; the use of which would be an insult to the Russians. My knowledge of non-US coins is very limited, so I hope this topic will generate some discussion on the coin in question. I did not get a good look, but I am hoping someone can provide identification.

Got the point of the insult to the Russians. Just questioned the way the mettalic composition of the coins was described.:-) Love the show.

Gotcha. I was just concerned when you referenced Chechen Rubles and not Russian Rubles. The best I can offer on composition is this Wikipedia table. Knowing the specific denomination would help. (I am having problems streaming the episode from Hulu right now).

On slightly related note- Ghost Hunters(SyFy channel) had an episode on Wednesday investigating the New Orleans Mint. Not much numismatic-related stuff was shown except for an old press that mangled/killed a few people over the years of production One point of investigation was the ghost of William Mumford, a drunken gambler who tore down the US Flag from the Mint after the Union recaptured the city from the Confederacy. The military governor ordered the capture and execution of Mumford, who was publicly hanged from a horizontal flagpole in the Mint portico.

There was another episode of Bones where a man was killed in the 50's or early 60's for his coin collection and they had just found his body. However, they found a 1943 copper cent still in his pocket. I almost screamed when Booth flipped it in the air!

This is a tuff post for me. I still use VHS tapes and for many medical reasons, I seldom watch a TV show while it is being broadcasted. And Bones is one of my favorites so this means I have a tape sitting in pile of them with that show on it. So my problem is I am trying real hard not to read this post and ruin the story for myself but I keep on peeking in case some of you say something that will give it all away.
