I wanted some opinions here, if you please.

I can get a 1907 St Gauden MS-64 PCGS graded coin for $1,202, including shipping. This is the regular 1907, not the high relief.

Is this a good deal? I think it is, but I can only find the PCGS guide that shows a price of $1,950 and a couple of ebay auctions that are in the $1,600 to $2,000 range.

This coin is from a coin dealer in Santa Monica I have bought gold buffaloes from this year.

Thanks in advance.

Heritage results indicate that's a pretty good price. They're around $1600, including the juice, at a Heritage auction. I strongly advise that you wander over to heritagecoins.com and get a free membership - it's your best source for prices on decent coins sold to real collectors.

Having said that, are you comfortable with your ability to determine the quality of the coin for the grade?

I looked at the Heritage website and didn't see any coins, but there were some rough numbers at the bottom of a MS63 coin they had for sale. When you say join, does this give you access to other information that I can't see just by browsing their site?

My grading skills are newbie at this point. I can look at a coin and give a good guess, but I would not buy an ungraded coin at this time without help from someone much more knowledgeable than me. I have been concentrating on the St Gaudens the last few weeks and can see major differences in different coins, but to give them a specific grade is still beyond me. I can take a few examples of already graded coins and use them as a reference, though.

Membership with Heritage gives you complete access to their archives, totalling almost one million coins auctioned in the last twenty years. When I looked in their archive for 1907 MS64 Saints, it brought up 284 results. Enough data?

I also agree that $1200 is a good price for a PCGS MS64.

Something else to consider, though: Do you like the look of the coin? I have seen some coins graded MS64 that simply did not have the eye appeal of some MS62's I've seen. I am a big believer in buying the coin, not the slab. If you covered up the grade with your finger and looked at the coin again, would you like it just as much?

Sorry, but while I feel that PCGS, NGC, and ANACS are basically very reliable, I still don't automatically take their grades as gospel. The most important factor is how you feel about the coin itself, regardless of what holder it's in.

Those are great points. I'll try to put up some pictures when I get it. I also just received my 20th anniversary gold eagle set. Pretty, pretty coins! If I could only get my camera to take close ups without being blurry!

Have you tried using a tripod? The blurriness is most likely camera shake from pressing the shutter release. Also, have you tried scanning your coins. I don't have a scanner so I've never tried it but a few friends scan their coins. This could be a whole new thread ...lol.

PS I love the no motto coins! I try to get a couple every year.
