Anyone think modern commemoratives are over priced and/or over rated? I think some are nice and some are dogs.It seems the mint charges too much of a premium on them as well.

I agree. They seem to just churn them out. Very few of the designs are outstanding. IMHO

I agree on both fronts. Modern art on today's coins and commemoratives pales in comparison to our older ones.

They can be expensive, and not every one is pleasing. For those reasons I decided to only collect certain types/theme. I only grab the military commemorative coins, the rest I don't bother with.

I personally don't think they minted a good one since the USMC Commem.

I prefer the older half dollars but I continue to add the new proof dollars to my collection. I do not collect modern circulating coins just the silver and silver proof versions. There are many unappealing modern commemoratives that ultimately are only worth their weight in silver but some do come out and seem to gain value such as the 2001 American Buffalo. Poor designs or subjects coupled with high purchase costs may, and have reduced public appreciation of these coins.

The mint is producing too many varieties of an array of denominations with the collector in mind. The same happened in 1936 and again in 1995. The result was sales not meeting expectations and that created rarities. I will continue to add the new proof dollars to my collection until the price prevents me from acquiring them.

I wish they would reduce the number of commemoratives designed each year and concentrate on only a couple. Heck I'd love for them to revive some classic designs from coins from the past like the Merc, Trade dollar, even the Peace. Sorry I could care less for a lot of them especially a lot from the 1990's. However I do like the Bald Eagle and the Lincoln.

I really believe the reason people buy the commemoratives they are pumping out now is either they are competing in a registry set or the commemorative has some sort of significant memory or is going to fund something they feel strongly about. Like the Boy Scout Commem. or the MIA Commem. Even if I didn't like the design I would have bought one anyway just because of what the coin is commemorating

Well, they are selling. As long as a significant number of people disagree then the mint will keep churning them out. For now, the best you can do is not buy them.

I agree they are overpriced, and also that the designs pale in comparison to older commemoratives. I don't know what it is, the older ones just look more sophisticated somehow, more like true works of art. This applies to regular coinage also, I absolutely HATE the obverse of the 2006 and later nickels, Jefferson just doesn't look right to me.

Yep, overpriced, particularly some of the keys to the modern set. For example, the Atlanta Olympic dollars are an uninspired mess, IMO, yet the baseball dollar of '92 is a successful use and execution of the 1 1/2" surface. There are some brilliantly designed coins in the series, and most of them have been after the abuses of Atlanta. The Bald Eagle half dollar reverse and the Lincoln Centennial dollar have been the most recent good designs. Not too enthusiastic about this years commems.

I like the old ones, back in the teens, 20s and 30s the coin were a work of art. Now days there nothing more than a copy of a work of art, worth "no more" than melt down value to me. By the way I have 6 Silver Eagles ranging from 1990 to 2006.
