I'm not sure what you are seeing, except that it is not a dropped letter.

When a design element of the die becomes filled with grease, dust, dirt or iron filings, etc. we get the typical "struck-through grease" type of errors.

Sometimes, the grease mixture becomes hard and compact through hundreds of strikes and falls out and onto a planchet. When the coin is struck, a perfect letter or number or other feature is incused into the coin.

I was trying to find a pic to show you. But, they are pronounced, rare and highly desirable errors.

Awesome explanation Scooby! Now I'll assume Coop's role with the images. Dropped letters are very scarce to come by.
Having over a dozen people over for a barbecue today, gotta run!

Awesome pics Chris! That's a really cool error. I wouldn't mind having one of those one day. Add that one to my wishlist.

hehe. Not mine anymore. But, if I remember correctly- I sold the 72-P (top) for $30 and the 69-D (bottom two) for $40 or $50 to the same collector who bought the first.

Dropped letters have a limited market, but in uncirculated grades, there are certainly interested collectors.

Interesting, I would have thought that they would be highly sought after.

I think I would be a member of that "limited market"

That's my point- Dropped Letters are a type that's appreciated and sought out by advanced collectors. Collectors who understand how they're created and how to recognize them. Anybody can collect a set of wheat pennies, that's of a rather broad appeal, but dropped letters are collected by a smaller group, I'd easily guess that there are far more RPM collectors and Doubled Die collectors than there are people seeking dropped letters. They sure are cool though!
