This one should be Polish. The text around the edges read : "SIGIII D G - are P M D L 91" and "SOLID are F - POLO". As Sigismund III ruled from 1587 to 1632 I suppose this is probably a Polish Solid from 1591 but I would appreciate a confirmation or a correction. And also an explanation of what "R P M D L 91" stands for. I looks like a mixture of roman and western numerals with the occasional extra letter thrown in for good measure.

I believe so, though I don't have a book covering the period to confirm.

It's the Latin abbreviation for the king's titles: Rex Poloniae, Magnus Dux Lithuaniae - King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania.

Many thanks, Sap! I couldn't get past "MD" meaning 1500 which seemed eminently appropriate until you started to look for the rest of the date.
