I tried photoshop and was able to figure out how to do the blue thing. That is very cool! By changing the shades and colors in the blue range you can really see the imperfections of a coin. This should be a great help on any other coins I look at buying.

I'm assuming I should use a pair of cotton gloves and tongs (designed for holding coins) for the acetone wash? Then take it out and put it on another clean cloth for it to dry? That seems to be what I have found in other threads on here.

I did 5 years in university as chemical engineer so disregard my attitude

Acetone is flammable ; no smoking
Acetone should be used in well ventilated areas and no eating during or after without washing your hands ; no inhaling fumes

I hold the coin in my naked hand and pour acetone over both sides and wave it through the air to dry it and then look with a 10X LED mangnifyer at the coin
In 90% of the cases I am happy
If this is not satisfactory I put the coin in a shot glass pour acetone over it and rotate it every 15 minutes ( other side up )swirling the solution gently once in a while
Then I take it out by the edges and move it strongly to dry
If 10X Led mag still shows deposits I repeat or leave it for 24 hours

After the first moment you put your fingers in acetone they will be grease free for a long time so no gloves needed for gold

When I am finished I use a good fat cream to grease my fingers

If you use gloves uses plastic without lubrification
( oh and do not do what my friend did , that is let go of the coin whilst shaking it to dry ; it flew all through the bathroom
that is bad for the grade

Thank you for the intrest
I do not get many positive reactions because everybody thinks they own a MS66 that went unrecognised ( I understand because I was insulted when my friend called my Napoleon MS62

Most people find grading too difficult and over here in Europe ebay grading has taken over
Circulated is a coin that passed worldwar II attached to the wheels of a pantzer tank a german said and I think he was not exagerating by too much

Ageka,

I will second what Silver Dollar said. I appreciate you guidance and expertise in relation to gold coins (and other things as well).
I have a better idea of what to look for now, which will help me a lot in the future. I especially like using Photoshop to look at coins in blue. Very cool and it really shows things you may not normally see.

I finally got the coin I started this thread about. Interesting story. The seller would only take a check or money order (first red flag!). She had 138 feedbacks, with no negative or neutrals (per toolhaus). So, based on this, and reading the actual feedbacks she had, I decided to bid on this coin. I won auction and mailed a check (I was very hesitant to deal this way, but decided to give it a try, but based on the rest of this I don't know if I'll do it again). This was on October 9th. She said she USPS'd the coin on the 16th insured with a turnaround of about 2 to 3 days. As of Thursday, the 26th, I didn't have the coin. I sent several emails, and tried calling the number she had given in her invoice to me, but never got anyone to pick up. I was really ticked. I even called a private investigator in her town to go out and bang on her door. But, before that happened, the post office left me a note about another package I had to go pick up. When I got there, this coin was there as well, and had been since the 18th (right in line with what her estimate was). The USPS had never given me a notice I had a package. That made me really mad!! I'm glad I got the coin, but her communication skills were totally absent. So, I got the coin, but was unhappy for a week thinking I got ripped off. But, I've used P.I.'s before to trace people down who owed me money or other things.

The coin is really nice, and you can hardly see the mark you notated in your earlier post. I think I'm going to send it to NCS instead of my trying the acetone route. It's a pretty expensive coin and I would hate to mess up and ruin it. Then if they fix it, it will get graded and we'll see how I come out.

I'll post up pictures once I get my camera taking good pictures, along with another St. Gauden I got this week.

@ Guido
I am glad it turned out well, after all, for you
I will only do banktransfers and paypal, no other form of payment anymore after I got ripped of paying with a money transfer to the US

I stopped bidding on anything that is not in driving distance
because I understand you need to initiate complaints with the small claims court in the city of the vendor here in Europe
In the US you can go to the small claims court of your home town and they will prosecute for free anywhere in the US

I never used a PI but surprised my last employer by having him convicted in workscourt . He had in house English lawyers who did not understand zilch zip nada about flemish belgian worklaw . That cost him like 50 000 dollars ; he had to pay for court cost and lawyers cost etc ( I will get what is mine at age 65 )

Now I have somebody that rearended me and scrapped a perfectly good 15 year old BMW and thought 600 Euro would settle all bills (sept 2005 ) . First courtappearance will be end Novembre . I just got offered an advance of 700 euro but my lawyer now is asking for medical experts to asses the pain I suffered from damaged ribs, tear in muscle of right foot and whiplash and permanent invalidity percentage .(moral damages )

If you ever buy pre 1900 small european goldcoins be advised some were glued on stiff paper as a way of collecting them
I got like half a dozen of them

That's a nice coin, now that it's cleaned up! The reverse is in much better shape. The obverse appears to have a lot more wear. This is a circulated coin, I take? Did you see it in person before you bought it? I'd be upset since it appears the guy mis-represented the coin.

Yeah, I used a PI for a former landlord who ripped me off for my deposit. I was in California, he sold the house and moved to Philadelphia. He would never return my calls, but I had his cell phone number and approximate area where he lived. I found a PI on the Internet in that area and he went and knocked on his door. Needless to say, my old landlord was pretty shocked!! It took about a week or so, but he wrote me a check, along with the money to pay the PI and it even cleared (I think he made good on it because of the intimidation of someone local calling you on a debt you owe). It makes me laugh now, but I was really ticked off at the time.

Because of that experience, I decided to do the same thing with this coin. I found out that the lady was out of town and her husband was supposed to send me an email to let me know, but he doesn't do email very well. She apologized profusely about the mistake, which made me feel better. That's the only problem with ebay or anything you buy that is mailed to you. Communication is crucial.

Sorry about your BMW, but more so the injuries you sustained! A car can be replaced, but working body parts can't. I hope it all works out for you.

This Vicky is typical for glued coins
MS64 plus on the glued side and MS60 with a lot of friction because of the page above in the same book rubbing it on the face
everytime the book is used
I got four french coins like that too
The glue is not visable with the naked eye , you need the scanner turned to blue or you need 10X magnification

You're good with this scanner stuff!!

I really like making them blue. I haven't seen anything like that on any coins I've looked at since you told me about this.
